A trip to Kuala Lumpur isn’t complete without a culinary marathon. As food is one of the city’s biggest bragging rights, an abundance of choices can easily overwhelm anyone. So, if you’re in KL and need some down time from all the sightseeing and have already tried all the street food, you can seek solace in one of the city’s many trendy cafes.

1. Avocatier

It goes without saying that all your avocado cravings will be sorted in Avocatier. With a menu tailored around everyone’s favourite health food, the cafe takes a green spin on classic brunch dishes, like the Avocado-bun Burger (from RM10, $3.30).

Their Avo Meets Florentine (RM24, $8) swaps out the usual ingredient of spinach for an avocado half, and their Avo Seafood Pasta (RM26, $8.65) is laden with an avocado basil sauce, while the oven-baked Avo Fingers (RM20, $6.65) are a healthy snack option.

Avo smoothies (RM10, $3.30) also make for a filling treat, combined with chocolate (RM12, $4), berries (RM16, $5.30), espresso (RM15, $5), and more.

2. The Mechanic Cafe

Sporting a minimalist theme, The Mechanic Cafe recently made its home in the newly developed township of Dataran Cheras. With a rather spacious interior, coffee sessions here are a lot more relaxed compared to its more snug counterparts in the city.

From its fully Western menu, you can get classics like Chicken Chop (RM20, $6.65) Carbonara (RM16, $5.30), and French Breakfast (RM20, $6.65) of mashed pumpkins and pork bolognese atop a baguette. Finish off with desserts like Mocha Crepe (RM14, $4.65), and Matcha Raspberry mousse cake (RM16, $5.30).

3. Kiara Cakes

If you’re allowing yourself a cheat day for sweets, you’re going to want to head to this little corner of Mont Kiara. With an array of homemade cakes and pastries displayed around the counter of Kiara Cakes, the cafe is easily a dessert-lovers’ haven.

Some of the selections infuse unconventional flavours, such as the Chocolate Olive Oil Cake (RM15.50, $5.15). For more conventional choices, there are the Burnt Cheesecake (RM16, $5.30) and Lychee, Strawberry and Rose Cloud Cake (RM14.50, $4.80).

If you prefer a savoury option, you can always fall back on the Smoked Salmon Puff (RM18, $6) or the Salted Egg Yolk Croissant (RM8.50, $2.80).

4. Pokok KL

At first glance, you wouldn’t guess that Pokok KL is in the city. Surrounded by trees and a grassy lawn, this glasshouse cafe offers some respite from the usual bustling scene of KL.

Brunch staples are featured heavily here, with favourites like the Big Breakfast (RM35, $11.65) and Poached Eggs with Avocado Mash (RM18, $6). A local-fusioned Chili Padi Pesto Pasta (RM20, $6.65) comes with eggs and beef bacon.

5. Kettlebell

Housed within a boutique gym, Kettlebell keeps those carbs in check with a healthy menu. Their Supercharged Smoothies (RM15, $5) are doused with protein powder, with flavours like Shelter Booster which has peanut butter added into its fruity mix. You can also get a Pina Colada Charger which is arguably the healthiest mocktail of all time.

You can DIY a salad or rice bowl (RM17, $5.65), or head for one of their regulars like their Peanut Butter Banana Toast (RM12, $4) and Duck Rice Bowl (RM25, $8.30). They have novelty Pink Lattes (RM12, $4) as well to match their pink decor and tableware.

6. Thurs 2.0

Looking at Thurs 2.0’s desaturated industrial decor is like having someone drape a grayscale filter over your eyes. The cafe has banked in on the recent trend of bubble tea cakes, where the star of their menu is their Signature Earl Grey Bubble Milk Tea Cake (from RM15, $5 for 4-inches, to RM35, $11.65 for 10-inches)

Cheesecakes (about RM13, $4.30) are also featured on the menu, with various toppings like peach and blueberry. These can be paired with their homemade You’re a Peach tea (RM12, $4) for a sweet, cooling respite on a hot day.

7. Cureé

Hokkaido-style soup curries are the heart and soul of Cureé. Their signature Soup Curry (RM15.5, $5.15) can be topped with choices of Chicken (RM19.50, $6.50), Natto (RM18.50, $6.15), Avocado (RM17.50, $5.80) or Seafood Tempura (RM23.50, $7.80).

For those who don’t feel as “curry-geous” for spicy food, there are other choices like Poke Bowls (RM23.50. $7.80) or Avopotato with Marmite Toast (RM11.50, $3.80).

8. Bo All Day Dining

Decorated to the nines with potted plants and rattan furnishing, Bo All Day Dining sits on the grander side of things with a luxurious tropical atmosphere. Their interior walls are also covered in illustrations of lush palms and local wildlife.

Woodfire oven pizzas are among the highlights here, with choices ranging from a basic Margharita (RM32, $10.65) to Otaru (RM42, $13.95) which is topped with cured salmon and mentaiko paste. Other Western choices include their Signature Rotisserie Roast (from RM28, $9.30 for a quarter chicken)

Asian fare also makes an appearance in the menu, with sharing portions of Oxtail Assam Pedas (RM43, $14.30) and Fried Chicken Galangal (RM28, $9.30)

9. Les Petits Jours

Easily resembling a studio apartment, Les Petits Jours in Cheras has a service counter at one end, a music corner with a piano and guitar in another, and a dining area in between. They don’t have a fixed menu, but they have daily set meals (RM20/$S6.65) which come with a main dish, rice, and miso soup.

They have previously served dishes like miso grilled mackerel, rosemary and orange pork with lotus, and slow-cooked chicken with scallions.

10. Crust Mont Kiara

It isn’t too difficult to guess what Crust’s specialty is: Pizza, of course. This family-friendly establishment serves classic wood fired pizza like the seafood Frutti Di Mare (RM36, $12), and 4-cheese Quattro Formaggi (RM36, $12)

11. Super Ramen

With its stripped walls and neon Astro Boy light installation, Super Ramen almost sticks out like a sore thumb in the modest township of Sri Petaling. Japanese noodles are the highlight of the menu, and their kitchen has created some rather over-the-top variations.

King of Pork Chop Ramen (RM28.80,$9.60) comes with an actual pork tomahawk that you can grab and eat with your hands.

Another one that doesn’t fit into its bowl is the Duck Confit Ramen (RM29.80, $9.90). They’ve also brought a local spin with their Super Laksa Ramen (RM26.80,$8.90).

Sharing plates are also available, making a good pairing with the restaurant’s cocktail selection after dark. Split a Squid Ink Calamari (RM18.80, $6.25) or a Salmon Tataki (RM23.80, $7.90), over a couple of Watermelon Coconut mocktails (RM12.80, $4.25).

12. Hexgon Cafe

Sporting a clean interior, Hexgon Cafe seems like a simple hangout spot for a cup of coffee. But its menu is far from basic, as they’ve got burgers made with baos instead of buns, served with fries. You can get some pretty indulgent options like a deep fried Namyu Pork Belly bun (RM13.90, $4.60) or Salted Egg Fried Chicken bun (RM13.90,$4.60)

Rice bowls such as their Japanese Curry Pork bowl (RM16.90, $5.60) and the Lemongrass Chicken bowl (RM16.90, $5.60) are another option. Wind down with a Long Black (RM9, $3), or Cappuccino (RM10, $3.30) after your meal.

An open-air concept makes Alta Cafe a comfortable place for breakfasts and brunches. The menu is kept pretty basic, with egg dishes, breakfast bowls, and pastries.

Three words: unicorn ice cream. Your inner girly-girl will squeal at the sight of those sugary, colourful desserts at Three Journey Cafe. They even let you have the fun of decorating and pouring white chocolate glaze over your own passion fruit yogurt mousse popsicle (RM17.90, $5.95).

Their other stand-out desserts include Unicorn Cake Popsicles (RM9.90, $3.30), French Rose Tea Soft Serve (RM12.90, $4.30). 15. Wicked Outpost

Tucked away along the upscale area of Jalan Ceylon, Wicked Outpost churns out coffee and sandwiches for takeaways throughout the day. This little container cafe also has open air seating, in case you want to sit down and catch your breath before heading back out onto the busy streets.
