1. Shin Katsu

Charcoal-grilled rice & black truffle tonkatsu

cafe restaurants 2025 - Shin KatsuImage adapted from: Shin Katsu

Shin Katsu might look like your typical Japanese katsu joint at first glance, but it’s helmed by Chef Masato, who has over 15 years of experience in the kitchen. The restaurant is known for its premium pork cuts, especially the Mangalica, often dubbed the “Kobe beef of pork” – that’s really high praise, BTW.

For something that melts in your mouth, go for the Mangalica Rosu Katsu Set ($42.80). It comes with the full works: refillable miso soup, rice, cabbage, and house-made pickles. And speaking of rice, it’s not just any white rice here. It’s charcoal-grilled – not cooked using a conventional rice cooker – which gives it that glossy sheen and a fragrant aroma.

Or, try the Mille-Feuille Black Truffle Katsu Set ($37.80) for something more indulgent. It’s a layered pork cutlet paired with truffle salt – a combo that surprisingly works without being too cloying.

And if you only have stomach space for a small bite after gobbling down your tonkatsu, add on the Unagi ($8.80/piece). Dip it in their Curry Sauce ($4.80) – it’s not your usual orangey-brown Japanese curry – this one has a peppery kick and leans savoury rather than sweet, which might sit better with local palates.

Pizza Studio Tamaki is not your average pizzeria, and the fact that it’s already fully booked for June says it all. It’s known for its signature dough: slightly chewy texture in the middle, with a light, airy crust, complemented by the ever-so-slightly bitter taste from the wood fire.

The classic Tamaki ($29) is topped with tomato sauce, cheese, cherry tomatoes, and basil leaves – simple, but it’s the go-to choice to enjoy their house-made dough in all its glory. For something indulgent, try the 5 Formaggi ($34), topped with 5 different cheeses: gorgonzola, taleggio, grana padano, and mascarpone.
