What is the difference between pool, billiards & snooker?
First, let’s get an essential question out of the way. Don’t worry, I was once completely clueless about the differences between pool, billiards, and snooker myself, and too paiseh to ask. Here’s the breakdown of their gameplay and equipment:
| Aspect | Pool | Snooker | Billiards (Carom) |
| Table Size | Typically 9ft by 4.5ft (though sizes can vary) | Usually 12ft by 6 ft | Usually 10ft by 5ft, no pockets |
| Balls Used | Uses 16 balls: 1 cue ball, 7 striped, 7 solid, and 1 black 8-ball | Uses 22 balls: 1 cue ball, 15 red, and 6 other coloured balls (yellow, green, brown, blue, pink, black) | Uses 3 balls: 1 white cue ball, 1 yellow cue ball (both can be used as cue balls), and 1 red target ball |
| Cues | Standard cues, around 58in long | Similar to pool cues, often with a lighter and narrower tip for precision | Longer and heavier cues with larger tips for control on a larger table |
| Main Objective | Pot balls into pockets according to specific game rules (e.g. 8-ball, 9-ball) | Score points by potting balls in sequence and completing specific combinations of pots and cushions | Score points by caroming the cue ball off both the object balls with a single shot, no pockets involved |
| Gameplay | Games vary; common types include 8-ball and 9-ball, where balls must be pocketed in a certain order or group | Sequence play where reds alternate with colours, colours re-spotted until reds are gone, then colours in sequence | Mainly 3-cushion billiards, where the cue ball must hit 3 cushions before the last ball |
| Scoring | No traditional scoring, game ends by potting the 8-ball after all of one’s group (solids or stripes) | Scored based on ball values: red (1pt), yellow (2pt), green (3pt), brown (4pt), blue (5pt), pink (6pt), and black (7pt) | Points awarded for each successful carom, typically in games like “three-cushion” billiards |
