What do I need to bring to the gym?
Yes, gym clothes and shoes are a must. But if you want to optimise your workout, here’s a complete list of things you need to bring to the gym:
- Gym bag: Space isn’t the only factor you’ll want to consider in picking a gym bag. If you’re heading to the office after the gym, you’ll want one with separate compartments to store your sweaty clothes and gym shoes to keep everything else clean and dry.
- Gym clothes: Sweat-wicking is the de facto for gym attire these days. But apart from there, picking what you wear to the gym also depends on the workouts you’ll be doing. Loose-fitting tees and shorts are great for strength and cardio training. Swop out shorts for compression leggings to absorb some shock as you work out.
- For men: dry fit t-shirts, gym shorts, compression leggings, socks
- For women: dry fit t-shirts, sports bra, gym shorts, compression leggings, socks
- Gym shoes: Get a pair you can do multiple workouts in, such as for running and weight training. They should be cushioned to absorb the impact of you hitting the treadmill, yet light and breathable so they don’t add weight to your movements.
- Water bottle: Insulated ones keep water cold so you can get a refreshing drink after a good sweat. Pack a shaker bottle if you plan on consuming protein shakes post workout.
- Towel: Most gyms provide at least a small towel to wipe yourself down. But you might want to bring an extra for use in the shower. Microfibre towels are recommended as they are lightweight and absorbent.
- Shower essentials: Not all gyms provide soap and shampoo so you’ll want to bring your own. A clarifying shampoo will ensure sweat doesn’t clog your follicles, which can cause dandruff. Conditioner isn’t a must but it’s helpful in keeping hair moisturised, if you’re washing your hair multiple times a day. Make sure you bring a facial wash as well – sweat and dirt cause breakouts.
- Protein powder & bars: Gym rats already know that a higher protein intake is necessary for muscle growth and recovery. And, protein powder is best consumed right after you drop your weights. You can switch out a protein shake for a protein bar for more fibre to keep you feeling fuller longer.
Find out more about protein powder. - Electrolytes: As you workout, your body doesn’t just lose water as you sweat, you also lose minerals like sodium and potassium that are necessary in preventing muscle aches. Adding electrolytes to your water will help you hydrate faster and keep your body’s pH in balance.
How to train at the gym?
Your first time at the gym can be intimidating, especially if you aren’t sure how to work out. All gyms should have trainers who can help explain how to use a machine if you’re unfamiliar with them. If not, stick to weights and cardio machines if you’re not confident in setting up the machines.
Here’s a 1-week gym workout plan that covers strength and cardio for a full-body workout.
| Day | Focus | Workout |
| 1 | Full-Body Strength | Strength
3 sets of 10-12 reps each:
Cardio
|
| 2 | Cardio & Core | Strength
3 sets of 10-12 reps each:
Cardio
|
| 3 | Active Recovery | Go for a stroll, swim, or do light stretches without overworking your muscles |
| 4 | Upper Body Strength | Strength
3 sets of 10-12 reps each:
Cardio
|
| 5 | Lower Body Strength | Strength
3 sets of 10-12 reps
Cardio
|
| 6 | Cardio & Flexibility | Cardio
Recovery
|
| 7 | Rest | Let your body rest by taking it easy. Go for a slow walk or take a sound bath |
How much weight should I lift?
Pick a comfortable weight that will allow you to complete your sets with good form. You’ll know you’ve hit the sweet spot when each set gets increasingly harder and slower, without you shaking or dropping the weight.
If you find yourself breezing through your workout, it’s time to increase your weights! Do it incrementally and work out at your new weight for 1-2 weeks before adding on more.
