What to know before visiting a theme park in Malaysia
You might think we’re stating the obvious but you’ll want to check opening times before heading to the theme park of your choice. It pays to be early so you’ll be able to escape crowds and long queues for rides. Theme park regulars are usually at park gates an hour before so they can be the first in line for popular rides.
If there are multiple attractions within a theme park, try heading to the one furthest from the gate first. These usually have the shortest queues, since most people would head to the nearest attraction after they enter the park.
There’s a lot of walking to be done between attractions, so you’ll want to pack as light as possible. Some must-haves include a change of clothes and a small towel if you’re going to be sitting on water rides.
Make sure to cover yourself in sunscreen regularly to prevent sunburns. Also bring a water bottle along to stay hydrated. Theme park dining options tend to be on the steeper side, so pack snacks and handheld foods like sandwiches and wraps to stave off hunger. Lastly, bring small change for locker reservations.

1. Sunway Lagoon

Located just 20 minutes away from Kuala Lumpur city centre, Sunway Lagoon has 6 different parks within its compound and more than 90 different attractions. This makes it a great place for those who love water activities, thrilling rides, and family-friendly entertainment.

The Amusement Park has classic rides like the Lost City of Gold Scream roller coaster, and a 360-degree rotating Pirate’s Revenge ship. There’s also a Carousel and carnival games where you can win prizes like stuffed toys.

2. Legoland Malaysia

Given that it’s only a 1.5-hour drive from Singapore, Legoland Malaysia is a fun and convenient place to bring your kids over the school holidays or on long weekends. Adults, your inner child will squeal in delight with nostalgia, especially if you grew up playing with Legos.

The 2-in1 theme park and resort has tons of rides and attractions, all centred around Legos. Look forward to activities like building your own Lego robots that you can take home at LEGO Mindstorms, or let the Beetle Bounce ride slingshot you 1.5m up into the air.

The Dragon is 1 of 3 roller coasters and is the largest one at Legoland, with many twists and turns while travelling up to 60km/h. Take note that riders of The Dragon need to be at least 8 years old and above 130cm.
The younger kids needn’t worry as they can still take the junior version, the Dragon’s Apprentice, that is designed specifically for them.

3. Escape Penang

Located less than 40 minutes from George Town, Escape Penang is nestled in a forest landscape and, in a bid to be more sustainable, is fully powered by solar energy during the day.

There are 36 different activities across the park. For the thrill seekers, indulge in some heart-pounding pursuits like Aerobat, where you can engage in air aerobatics, and the Zip Coaster, a 1km-long zip line that takes you through the forest.

If you need to cool off after these exhilarating courses, try out The Longest, literally the longest tube water slide in the world at 1,111m. There’s also The Speed Racer which features 4 slides next to each other, where you lie on a board and race other people down a water slide.
And when looking for a spot to relax, visit the Escape Club, a bar within the pool where you can sit back and lounge with a chilled beer.

4. Lost World of Tambun

The Lost World of Tambun in Ipoh screams Indiana Jones vibes and ancient temple design. This theme park has unique offerings apart from the usual theme park rides, such as a tiger enclosure, petting zoo, and tin mining attraction.

Drop by the Lost World Tin Valley and get a crash course in finding bits of tin with Dulang Washing, where you take a giant sieve to wash away the debris and extract tin. Or, pay a visit to Ruby the raccoon, the star of Lost World Petting Zoo for some adorable photos.

The facade of the theme park isn’t the only thing that is inspired by Indiana Jones; the park has tours that’ll take you through an actual cave, a jungle, and a tunnel. If that’s not enough, scale a mountain or make your way through a high elements rope course.

Once you’re done for the day, take a soak in one of the park’s 8 different hot springs and let the warm waters help you relax. Everything from jacuzzis to foot spa hot springs is available and created using the naturally warm and soothing waters from the surrounding hills.

5. Berjaya Times Square

Berjaya Times Square Theme Park in Kuala Lumpur is the perfect place for daredevils who aren’t fans of being under the sun. The entire amusement park is located within Berjaya Times Square mall, so there’s plenty to do before and after enjoying the rides.

Attractions like Spinning Orbit are designed to take you up 30m off ground level and then spin you at 10 rounds per minute, a ride that you should try for the kicks. Just remember to take it easy on lunch if you’re thinking of taking this ride.

Another must-try is the 800m-long Supersonic Odyssey, a roller coaster that travels at a face-distorting 80km/h and has plenty of twists, turns, and inversions.

6. Genting SkyWorld

Genting Highlands may be famous for its casinos, but it also has a massive theme park that has rides and attractions based on famous movies like Independence Day and Night At The Museum.

Genting SkyWorld has 9 zones which have a good mix of activities that both adults and kids can enjoy. Head over to Central Park and hop on Independence Day: Defiance, an interactive 3D ride that puts you in the middle of the fight against alien invaders.
Then walk over to Andromeda Base next, which has a ride called the Terraform Tower Challenge, where you’re slowly raised above ground level and released into a freefall drop. You can also expect to see more exciting rides coming in the future like Mad Ramp Peak, a dual-powered roller coaster motorcycle ride.

7. A’Famosa Water Theme Park

If you’re in Malacca for a weekend of shopping, you might want to consider spending a day at A’Famosa Water Theme Park. The park is surrounded by lush greenery and scenic mountains, a good escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

There are plenty of rides and attractions to suit every mood. For a chill time, hop on an inner tube and go with the flow on the Lazy River as it takes you around the water park.

For more invigorating rides, try out the Big Ice Cream which is one of the largest cone-shaped water rides in Southeast Asia. Or, maybe the High Speed, a 7-storey high-velocity water slide that sends you bolting down.
Aside from the water park, there are also activities like a Monkey Island Cruise, Animal Feeding, and a Safari Adventure where you can spot grazing animals from a Jeep.

8. i-City Theme Park

Located 1 hour away from Kuala Lumpur by car, i-City in Shah Alam is basically your standard amusement park on steroids. This place houses 4 large precincts, each with a different theme.

The Snowalk lets you cool off from the hot sun, with 50,000sqft of winter wonderland set to 8°C. Ice sculptures and snow slides are just some of the things you can expect in this precinct. It’s also the ideal place to start a snowball fight, so get ready to duck and dodge your way around the different statues.

But the real highlight of i-City is the City of Digital Lights. Boasting over 1 million LEDs across the landscape, this precinct is best visited after sundown when the lights can really work their magic. For a bird’s-eye view of the entire park, the Ferris Wheel, which is decked out in bright LED lights, is the ride of choice.

9. Monkeys Canopy Resort
Theme park with largest dinosaur park in Southeast Asia
Just a 30-minute drive from KL is Monkeys Canopy Resort, a family-centric theme park that has a bunch of attractions such as go-karting and rock climbing.

They also have 2 indoor playgrounds: Conquer Indoor Extreme Park and Safari Escape Playland. The first is for kids with loads of energy to burn off, as they take on a high elements rope course with steep slides, tower jumps, and ninja warrior obstacles.

New to the park is Dino Desert, the largest dinosaur park in Southeast Asia. If you were one of those kids who could name dinosaurs beyond common ones like tyrannosaurus rex, triceratops, and stegosaurus then this is the place for you.
There are 144 different animatronic dinosaur sculptures strewn across the park that’ll roar and move about. They can get quite loud so it’s best to let the kids know they aren’t real.
