iWERKS Theatre at Singapore Discovery Centre

If you reside in the West, movie dates probably require making a trip to JEM, Jurong Point, or West Mall. But if you’re tired of the same ol’ haunts, there’s a lesser-known cinema located at the Singapore Discovery Centre

It’s called iWERKS Theatre and features a 5-storey-tall flat screen. Plus, it’s also easily accessible via public transport, as it’s located just an 8-minute walk away from Joo Koon MRT Station.

Yes, you read that right. iWERKS Theatre has Singapore’s largest flat screen in a cinema at 5 storeys high. Movie tickets go for $7 on both weekdays and weekends. If you’re watching a 3D movie, it costs $9/ticket

Like any regular cinema, you can purchase popcorn ($4) at the concession stand. However, you are also allowed to bring your own drinks and snacks from home.

One thing to take note of is that if you were hoping to catch all the latest blockbuster movies, you may want to go to a regular cinema instead. The selection here is limited with about 2-3 titles showing at one time, but don’t expect boring documentaries.

At the time of writing, the cinema is currently showing the latest Paw Patrol flick and Retribution, where you’ll see Liam Neeson do Liam Neeson-things.

Catch a 4D movie at the XD Theatre Ride

If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, there’s also the XD Theatre Ride for 4D movies – so you’ll ride their movies, not just watch them. By that, we meant that you’ll feel strong winds, experience the shaking of earthquakes, and be flung from side to side. Tickets cost $10/adult and $8/child for a show that lasts approximately 5 minutes.

You can choose from a variety of titles such as Dino Safari 2, Sky Hunt, or Pinnochio. Escape a dinosaur stampede, jump from a skyscraper, or traverse a land of toys via hoverboard. Take your pick.

Other fun things to do at Singapore Discovery Centre

Once you’re done with your movie – be it in 2D, 3D, or 4D, – explore the Singapore Discovery Centre. It’s free entry for Singaporeans and PRs, with cool exhibits and immersive installations.

While the centre’s been around for a while – 27 years to be precise – it’s kept up to date with the happenings and trends in town. Bring the kids for SingaPaw Saturdays, a family-friendly event that happens every month. This month, there’s a silent disco with a tracklist of family-friendly tunes to boogie together.

Alternatively, give the Black Lake Facility, an escape room with 13 rooms and 4 story chapters, a go. Or maybe go head-to-head in a round of laser tag too.

And since it is spooky szn, we should also mention that the SDC is running their own Halloween event for the 3rd time this year. It’s called Harrowing Halloween 3 and it has a haunted house, haunted maze, and an interactive scare zone. So if the scares at Halloween Horror Nights aren’t enough for you, head over to the SDC for more this month.

Catch your next movie at iWERKS Theatre

Aside from being a compulsory stop on every BMT recruit’s journey, SDC’s got some really cool attractions. If you take movies as seriously as I do, iWERKS Theatre may be a fun and affordable alternative to your regular cinemas. Plus, you have the option to watch movies in 2D, 3D, or 4D.

So if you’re ever thinking of watching a movie in the West, here’s 1 more spot to consider.

Getting to Singapore Discovery Centre: Take bus 182 or 182M from Joo Koon MRT Station.
