Deepavali Open House 2022

The Festival of Lights is just around the corner – and with any festive holiday comes events to immerse yourself further in the celebrations. Ring in Deepavali this year at the Indian Heritage Centre (IHC) Open House, which has a variety of events set up for the public.

The event will take place from 1st-23rd October 2022 in the vicinity of Little India. Here are some of the activities you can expect.

Enjoy the street light up from an open-top bus or trishaw

What is the Festival of Lights without any street light ups? Keeping with the tradition of previous years, Little India has been illuminated with colourful displays that are a treat for the eyes. You can enjoy the sight of these lights via foot, open-top bus, or trishaw rides.

This year is extra special because there are tours of Little India on the open-top bus ($10) you often see being taken by tourists. You’ll get an unobstructed view of the lights as the bus cruises through the streets.

While you’re there, snap some photos on the top deck. Bus rides are available from 6pm-8pm, every Saturday between 1st and 22nd October 2022.

Alternatively, you can jio one other person on a 15-minute trishaw ride ($10/ride) around the streets of Little India. You can catch a ride between 6pm-8pm, every Friday from 30th September to 21st October 2022.

Make a contribution to the Deepavali-themed LEGO Mural

At the IHC, you can add your own touch to the community LEGO Mural inspired by rangoli designs. All you have to do is “colour in” the mural with coloured LEGO bricks.

This mural is a collaboration piece with a local artist, Jeffrey Kong. By the end of the festival, you will be able to see how the bricks placed by each visitor come together to form one big beautiful artwork.

Take part in festive workshops

Take the festive mood up a notch by getting hands-on at the workshops held at IHC. Take part in a workshop where you get to paint your very own clay oil lamp ($10). Then, bring it home to spruce up your living space.

You can also learn how to cook some traditional dishes often served during Deepavali from celebrity chefs such as MasterChef Singapore contestant Vasunthara Ramasamy. On 16th and 23rd October 2022, catch their cooking demonstration ($10) – you’ll even get to taste the dishes cooked by them.

There will also be free activities you can try such as oil lamp decorating and crafting Ramayana shadow puppets-a prop used to convey the story of Deepavali.

Get festive this Deepavali

Each year during Deepavali, Little India comes to life with a colourful and vibrant lights display. This year, you get to view them in new and interesting ways – whether it’s an open-top bus or a traditional trishaw. So do head down if you would like a slice of what this bright festival has to offer.
