You may have heard frequent JB goers mention Mount Austin before. While this neighbourhood in JB used to be a hidden gem, it’s now become one of the hot spots for Singaporeans.
Here’s how you can spend a full day at this bustling neighbourhood with tons of Instagrammable cafes, activities like tufting and pottery, and even a kid-friendly water and adventure park.

How do I get to Mount Austin from Singapore?
If you’re driving to JB from Woodlands checkpoint, it’s about a 25-minute drive to reach Mount Austin. The journey takes longer if you’re planning to drive over from Tuas, which will take around 45 minutes instead. For those intending to take a Grab, we booked one from JB Sentral and the fare cost was around RM65.

Whether you’re someone who has always wanted to try tufting or has already been to all the tufting studios in Singapore, Tufting Nuts at Mount Austin is great for both novices and pros.
Enjoy the craft at an affordable rate here at just RM269/pax and take home a 40x40cm rug after 3 hours of tufting time. For couples, there’s also an ongoing promotion at RM199/pax with a minimum of 2 pax.

Don’t worry if it’s your first time trying out tufting, the friendly staff there will help guide you through. All you require is an image you want to recreate and plenty of arm strength.
Your rugs will require some touch-ups after the session, so do note that there’s a waiting period of 1 month before the finished product can be collected. You can get them shipped to Singapore at a price or plan another JB day trip back.

2. Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park
Family-friendly amusement park
If you’re looking for a way to beat the heat, head to Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park. Take on the water slides and challenge your friends to a downward race at the Supersurf, which are 6 high-speed racing lanes. Thrill-seekers should check out the G-force Alley to experience a gravity-defying moment as you woosh down the snake-like curves.
Those with littles ones can take them to Splash World, where they’ll go bonkers over the water playground. Nap time afterwards will be a breeze for mommies.
There’s also an obstacle course for those looking for an adventure. In fact, Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park has the longest indoor suspension rope course in Malaysia, featuring 7 course routes with 51 obstacles to try out, regardless if you’re a first-timer or a pro daredevil.

3. Loud Speaker Family Karaoke

4. Banghistory Escape Amusement

Banghistory Escape Amusement has 3 themed escape rooms that will leave even the biggest horror fanatics with shivers down their spines.
Gung ho warriors who have no fear can check out Cecil Hotel inspired by the infamous real unsolved murder case. Another option is Resentment Teacher-Student, where you get to uncover chilling secrets of a haunted school. If that isn’t enough to give you nightmares, there’s also a live scare actor for max HHN vibes.

If you’re a scaredy-cat, there’s something for you too. At 3/5 on the horror scale is the Hong Kong Broadcasting Station, where participants can investigate the sudden disappearance of a radio DJ called Nicky.

IG-worthy cafe with nature inspired decor

Eden by Wizards blew up in popularity for their interior design and we totally see why. In contrast to the dull industrial area it’s located in, the space is warmly decorated with lush greenery and solid wood furnishing which reminds us of Bali. Aesthetics aside, they are more popular for their fusion dishes, although slightly pricier compared to nearby cafes. Try the Siamese prawn spaghettini (RM35) for a Thai surprise or the Gochujang Beef Rice Bowl (RM30) for a spicy kick.

The cafe serves affordable, good-quality food starting from RM15. Try their highly recommended Quesadilla and Cashew Nut Pesto Chicken Pasta both at RM29.90. If you’re travelling with someone who doesn’t eat meat, there are also plant-based options such as the Truffle Carbonara (RM31.90).

Hot pots may be typical at family gatherings, but Two Pesos breaks all stereotypes. Their 1-2pax hotpots are perfect for anyone looking for a quick meal. The individual pots also ensure that you don’t have to worry about your friends choosing something you don’t like.
There’s a wide variety of soup bases to choose from, like Milky Seafood and Italian Tomato. The hotpot is priced from RM20.80 and you can choose your protein from pork, beef, fish, or lamb. They also offer vegetarian-friendly options, and you can add additional ingredients if you’re feeling extra hungry.

10. MeowMe Cat House
Adorable cats & affordable sweet treats from RM12

Cat lovers will adore the felines over at MeowMe Cat House. The cafe requires no entrance fee and imposes no time limit, just order something off the menu and you get to chill with the cats for as long as you wish.

Try their Lemon Cheese Cake (RM15), which looks just like a block of cheese, paired with the Sparkling Yuzu Lemon Soda (RM14) for a refreshing afternoon pick me up.
The cats are free to roam around and are well taken care of by the friendly staff. The space is kept clean and odour-free – so rest assured there won’t be added ingredients of cat fur in your desserts.
Bonus: Cat owners are welcome to bring their fur babies with them to the cafe, just make sure to look after them throughout.

Enjoy the seafood broth alongside the star of the show; the plump, juicy clams. There’s also an option to top up RM3.80 for an additional kick with their Tom Yum Soup. After all, nothing beats a comforting bowl of soup after a long day of shopping.
