Bond with your family.

Kids, it’s time to kick back and enjoy your freedom after five whole months of studying. Parents, it’s time to take your kids on those outings that you’ve always talked about. Everyone’s busy enough during the school season, and you should reward yourself and your kids with some quality time together.

Here are ten things that you guys can do with your family this June holiday!

1. Play Outdoors!

With a myriad of activities for the whole family to do together, break away from your phones and soak in the sun’s rays! Grab your cousins, nieces and nephews together for some fun activities. Have a fun time waging war with your Nerf blasters or just play a game of hide and sick – the possibilities are endless. So head on out, and get your body some much-needed Vitamin D.

Leave your tablets and phones at home. You’ll feel a little strange at first, but you’ll appreciate it when you’re spending quality time with loved ones.

2. Take time out to help the less fortunate

Most of us are fortunate enough to have food on the table and money in our wallets. However, there are groups of less fortunate citizens without the amenities that we have access to. Having been a volunteer myself, the gratitude that I received from the beneficiaries brought about a sense of joy in my heart.

Volunteer at a charity you care about with your children and teach them to have a heart for the less fortunate. The knowledge that I made a difference in someone else’s life is one I cherish, and being exposed to doing charitable works at a young age will lead your children to be more empathetic and caring as they grow up. Check out this list for ideas on where to start.

3. Pick up new skills together

If you’re looking to improve yourself, try attending a workshop. With community centres having classes that cater to diverse interests from baking to sports to arts and craft, there’s something for everyone. Classes like these will develop your children’s skills, and will create common interests for future activities!

4. Hold a picnic gathering

While having a meal at home or in a restaurant is okay, it pales in comparison to the picnic experience! Getting to know each other while boiling a pot of soup is a special experience, and teaching your kids to mash potatoes the right way puts joy into an otherwise menial task.

In addition, having a picnic outside provides a welcome change from the usual four walls, creating a unique ambience for the whole family, unrivalled by any other.

5. Catch a movie under the stars

And while you’re having a picnic, skip the usual cinemas and theatres and watch an outdoor movie! Aviva Superfundae, held on 20 June, will be hosting a screening of Mr. Peabody and Sherman on a giant outdoor screen. Bring your own food and relax on a picnic mat as you laugh yourselves silly at Mr Peabody and Sherman’s antics!

6. Go off the beaten trail and explore Pulau Ubin on your bicycles

Cycling, while not the most strenuous of activities, can be one of the most fulfilling. Grab a bike and your family, and visit Pulau Ubin! Ubin offers untouched natural spots, such as Chek Jawa and the famous granite quarry for the whole family to marvel at. You can check out our feature on Ubin here.

7. Have a family photoshoot

8. Head out on an ice-cream trail

A single scoop makes anyone’s day, and with all the hipster ice-cream parlors popping up all over Singapore, getting fat has never been easier. If your child likes ice cream, show her that there are flavours other than chocolate and vanilla. Get started with this list on the 12 best soft serve ice cream shops in Singapore.

9. Get into the local music scene

The local music scene is underrated. Get your children interested in local music and inspire them to chase their dreams. 53A is one of Singapore’s most popular bands, and you can catch them at some of the coolest gigs around. They’ll also be performing at Aviva SuperFundae at Gardens By The Bay, and will be followed by PennyLane, who stand out with their energising performances.

See your child bobbing his head to the music? You might have a budding star on your hands!
