8 Prawning Places In Singapore Open 24h Or Till Late With Sessions From $16/Hour

Prawning in Singapore

Nothing beats catching your own seafood kampung style, and cooking them fresh on the spot. Prawning is probably one of the chillest pastimes in SG, where you can socialise with your friends while engaging in an activity that offers a tasty reward. If this sounds good to you, check out these 8 prawning places in Singapore.

All you need is some bait, patience, and a few deft tugs.

What is prawning?

In case you’re unfamiliar with the concept of prawning, it’s basically like fishing, except you’re now trying to bait and catch prawns instead. While most fishing spots take place out in the open, prawning is done at a man-made water pond, making it easier for you to get some catch.

Unlike fishing, however, you can choose to grill and eat your prawns on the spot too, making it a fun late-night activity with friends or family.

Things to know when prawning

Prawning is a relaxing activity that’s easy to pick up, no pun intended. If you’re a beginner who’s going prawning for the first time, here are some tips to up your prawning game:

  • Make sure your bait reaches the bottom of the pond: Experienced prawn anglers have observed that prawns mainly hang around the bottom of the pond instead of swimming around, so having your bait hang low will increase your chances of catching one.
  • Have a cloth for de-hooking larger prawns: If the pond you’re visiting has larger prawns – particularly those with pincers – up for grabs, using a cloth to de-hook these prawns can help guard against them pinching you in the process.
  • Place the bait near the hook: Apart from prepping the right size of bait, placing the bait so the tip of the hook is barely visible is generally recommended, as this makes it easier to actually “hook” into the prawn once it starts gnawing on your bait.

Do I need to bring anything to go prawning?

All prawning places will provide you with a fishing rod, bait, and net, so you won’t have to worry about being ill-equipped. But if you want to elevate your prawning experience further, consider purchasing a wet wipe or hand sanitizer to clean up after prawning.

Bringing along some seasonings or sauces will come in handy when you’re cooking your catch. And last but not least, a bottle of mosquito repellent to ward off any pesky mosquitoes nearby.
