This Event At West Coast Park Has Cool Workshops & Activities To Experience The Islander Life

Islanders Day at West Coast Park

Chances are, most of us grew up in an HDB flat and never really got the chance to properly experience what kampong life on an island was like. Activities like fishing or building a boat weren’t part of our daily lives. Well, you’re in luck because you’ll get a glimpse into that world at Islanders Day, happening on 14th June 2025 at West Coast Park. Here’s what you need to know:

What is Islanders Day about & who are the orang pulau?

Long before towering skyscrapers filled our skyline and the 9-6 grind became the norm, there were coastal communities living on nearby Singapore islands like the Southern Islands. They were known as the Orang Pulau, or islanders, and they lived a simple life by the sea.

Over time, many of them relocated to the mainland – mostly around areas like Telok Blangah and Pasir Panjang – to make way for Singapore’s rapid development.

While they may have had access to a more modern way of life, it also meant that they risked losing their culture and identity over time, including the way of the islanders.

That’s where Hari Orang Pulau, or Islander’s Day, comes in. The event is all about celebrating and preserving the islanders’ heritage, with activities, workshops, and performances shared by the community themselves. It’s a rare chance to experience their way of life, right here on the mainland.

What to expect at Islanders Day?

Expect a variety of workshops, activities, film screenings, and performances during the event. We’ve highlighted some of the must-sees below, but for the full programme and specific timings, head over to the Islander’s Day website.

In true islander fashion, get hands-on at the Learn Maritime Skills workshop ($16.82), where you’ll learn about traditional fishing from A-Z. From how different tools are used to how the fishing methods vary across seasons, location, and species, rest assured that you’ll be reeling in knowledge like a seasoned pro by the end of the class.

At the Jong Workshop ($16.82), you’ll dive into the history behind the Jong – a mini wooden racing boat that islanders used to build and race for fun. See how elements like the weather conditions and wind speeds shaped the way each boat was designed. Then, put your newfound knowledge to the test by building your own aerodynamic Jong.

Storytelling session for kids

It’s not uncommon these days to spot a few jiak kantangs or kids growing distant from their Malay identity. But there’s always a way to keep the culture alive. Start them young with fun and engaging storytelling sessions like Tales from the Nusantara: Under the Sea ($17.87).

Kids aged 5 and above can look forward to captivating stories inspired by islander mythology. You’ll hear about:

  • A diver who gets bitten by something that cannot be explained by logic or science.
  • A fisherman whose quiet day turns chaotic thanks to an unexpected catch.
  • A wise turtle who dishes out lessons on freedom and how fate often works in mysterious ways.

Film screenings & performances

If you’d rather sit back and relax, catch the impressive moves of Silat Seni Gayong Nagabura, a Silat interest group showing off their fighting skills. Alternatively, if you’re after something more lighthearted, the Tak Takut Kids Club is putting on theatrical performances that’ll have you and the little ones laughing along.

Those who are planning to bring elderly family members along will appreciate the film screenings lined up too. Here’s what’s playing:

  • Bawang Puteh Bawang Merah (1959): A film that explores the difference between good and evil through the portrayal of red and white onions.
  • Dara Duka Sang Pemain Joget Dangkung (2020): An award-winning documentary about the only female leader of the Joget Dangkung troupe in Tanjung Pinang.
  • Voices: Isle Of The Brave (2024): A heartwarming story about a pair of siblings who return to the island they grew up in, remembering childhood memories and the spirit of the islander community.

Plus, all of these performances and film screenings are free of charge, so you can just walk in and pick your choice of entertainment.
