Ask any chef, and he’ll likely tell you that, short of harvesting it yourself at a farm, Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre (PPWC) is where you’ll find the freshest fruit and veg in Singapore. Open 24/7, 365 days a year, this wholesale market is truly one which never sleeps, though you should note that individual stalls have their own opening hours.
What is Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre?

The Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre was built in several phases over the years from 1981 to 1984 to house wholesalers who were being displaced from the city centre.
Built on 15 hectares of reclaimed land, comprising 26 blocks and more than 1,000 stalls, warehouses, cold rooms and more, it would become Singapore’s wholesale hub for fresh produce such as fruit and vegetables, as well as dried goods.
As a one-stop hub that never closes, this is where everyone comes to get their goods. If you’ve been to a Costco, this is the market and warehouse version.
SFA figures dating back to 2017 show that more than 40% of the fruits and veg that Singapore imports pass through PPWC.
Touring PPWC with Hidden Heritage Tours
If you’re thinking of visiting PPWC for the first time, and the idea of navigating or getting lost in its maze is daunting, you can get yourself oriented with the market and its history on a Hidden Heritage Tour, an activity which is claimable with your SG Culture Pass. Priced at $60/adult and $50/child, this tour starts at 8.30pm, and you’ll have to check their website for the next available dates.
As for why it starts at such an hour, it’s to avoid the market’s peak periods in the day, and from midnight, though to be honest, there’s nonstop activity going on around the clock.
Think of it as a familiarisation exercise with PPWC – once you get to know it and its history, you might find yourself appreciating the unsung role that it plays in every Singaporean’s life.
Imagine our surprise when we discovered that even the cold rooms of PPWC can be entered, though you should definitely be mindful of the workers moving great crates of produce around, whether by hand or on forklifts.
Considering this is what’s said to be a “slow hour”, you might picture a vastly more chaotic scene during peak times.
The highlight of the 1.5 hour-long tour might differ from participant to participant – for some, it might be hearing about the market’s storied past and the sordid details of true crimes which took place in the market. For others, it might be the sheer bounty of fresh-off-the-boat produce, in quantities that are, at the very least, massive.
Then, there’s the fruit tasting that you’ll get at KSY Fruits, one of the many wholesalers at the market.
As with the rest of the tour, it’s an interactive session where you get to speak with the owner of KSY Fruit, pick his brain, and ask any burning questions you may have regarding the best of the season’s produce, or even why fresh soursops are so hard to come by these days.
If you’re one of those who have, for the duration of the tour, had to restrain yourself from stopping and buying everything you set eyes upon, here’s your chance. With multiple cold rooms holding fruits from all over the world, the only limit is your budget and what you can physically carry.
You might get the chance to speak to and purchase from other wholesalers as well on your tour – do note that, as these are wholesalers, only selected items can be bought in single pieces. Otherwise, you might buddy up with your fellow tour pals and share the loot and costs.
P.S. You’ll want to have cash on hand – this is definitely not a cash-free shopping experience.
The tour ends by approximately 10pm, but feel free to hang around and continue browsing the market hall – come 12am is when retailers, restaurateurs, small business owners and wet market storeholders arrive to pick up their stocks for the day.
There’s no time like now to pay a visit to PPWC, or your fruit and veg aunty at your neighbourhood wet market. We heard that business has gotten worse for the wholesalers over the last few years – a domino effect of elderly wet market fruit and veg vendors ceasing operations in the absence of younguns to take over the business, and shoppers opting to shop online or at mainstream supermarkets.

There are 3 main sections in the PPWC: fruits, vegetables, and dried goods. The tour does not cover the dried goods section, which is more active by day. Prepare to be overwhelmed, and potentially overstimulated, because this isn’t a jaunt to FairPrice or your neighbourhood wet market.

In essence, visiting PPWC is essentially cutting out the middleman in this equation, so you can expect prices to be lower than you’d find in the supermarket or wet market. Where your wet market vendor has already curated a selection from the IRL catalogue that is the Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre, walking here yourself would be like browsing the full range.
How do I get to Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre?
All visitors to PPWC need to be registered for entry – you can do so via the e-registration system on the SFA website with your IC number, or scan it at the kiosks to enter.
Getting to the PPWC is pretty simple. It’s a 7-minute bus ride from Haw Par Villa MRT Station on the Circle Line, or a 1.2km walk, which takes approximately 17 minutes. If you’re driving, there are plenty of parking spaces available at 1 Wholesale Centre, with reasonable rates at $2.40 for 2 hours of parking.
