This New DBS Card Reward-Maxxes For You, With Deals At HDL & DTF In JB Too

DBS Chromo Card

Reward maxxing is basically a full-time job. You’re supposed to know which card gives extra points on Grab, which one to whip out at the supermarket, and which one to swap in the second you cross into JB. Miss the memo, and you’re stuck earning the base rate on a purchase that should’ve earned way more.

The DBS Chromo Card is built to cut that admin out entirely. It’s a new credit card that automatically figures out your top 2 local spending categories every month and bumps your cashback on them, no selecting, no switching, no spreadsheet required. It also comes with 0 FX fees, so your Haidilao and Din Tai Fung runs in JB are part of the deal too.

Here’s the full breakdown before you apply.

Does DBS Chromo really pick your cashback categories for you?

Yes, and this is genuinely the whole point of the card. Most cashback cards make you commit to categories upfront, usually once a quarter, and if your spending shifts halfway through, like a sudden Korea trip, you’re out of luck.

DBS Chromo Card - grocery cashback

Chromo skips that hassle of choosing entirely. Every month, it looks at where you actually spent the most across 6 eligible categories: dining, travel, shopping, transport, entertainment, and wellness, and automatically applies bonus cashback to your top 2.

Spent big on flights and skincare this month? Those get the bump. Went ham on hotpot and Grab next month instead? It adjusts on its own.

How much cashback can you actually earn with DBS Chromo?

Here’s the math: you get up to 5% cashback on your top 2 eligible local spend categories, and 1% cashback on everything else you spend locally, with no minimum required for that base rate.

DBS Chromo Card - cashback on spending

The fine print worth knowing:

  • You need to hit $500 in local spend a month to unlock the 5% bonus.
  • Bonus cashback is capped at $30 per category, so realistically that’s up to $60 a month from your top 2 categories.
  • Your total monthly cashback, base plus bonus combined, is capped at $150.
  • You can toggle to earn 1.3 miles per $1 spent instead if you prefer, credited as 1 DBS Point = 2 miles that never expire.
  • You can switch between cashback and miles once a month via the DBS digibank app, and it still applies retroactively, so even if you switch mid-month, your Reward Preference on the 10th of the following month decides how that whole previous month gets paid out.

Translation: you’re not locked into picking cashback or miles for life, and you’re not locked into guessing your categories either.

Can you use DBS Chromo in Malaysia without extra fees?

Yes. Chromo charges 0 FX fees, whether you’re spending online or in-store, anywhere in the world.

DBS Chromo Card - shopping cashback

If JB is basically your second home, that means no 3%-3.5% mark-up eating into your mala and skincare haul the way it does on most other cards.

One honest caveat: overseas spend doesn’t count towards your local cashback categories, so the actual saving here is the FX fee itself, not extra rewards on top. Still, that’s real money back in your pocket on every Causeway trip for groceries, food, and everything else.

What deals do DBS Chromo Cardholders get in Singapore & JB?

Beyond the cashback mechanics, cardholders also get a running list of brand deals, split by day of the week in Singapore, plus partner discounts overseas.

Is there a sign-up bonus for new DBS Chromo Cardholders?

Yes, and it’s a decent one. If you’re new to DBS/POSB credit cards and aged 21 to 29, you can pick between a Samsonite MINTER 80/30 Trunk (worth $680) or $288 cashback when you sign up. You’ll just need to spend a minimum of $500 within your first 60 days and have a valid PayLah! account.

Use promo code <CMSAM> for the trunk or <CM288> for the cashback.

How much does DBS Chromo cost to own?

The annual fee is $196.20, but it is waived for the first 5 years, longer than most cards on the market, which typically only waive fees for 1 to 3 years.

Your first card design is free. Pick from red, pink, teal, lime, or charcoal. After that, changing your card colour costs a fee, capped at one change per calendar month through the digibank app.

A couple of other numbers to know: late payment fees are $100, and finance charges sit at 27.8% p.a. if you carry a balance – both fairly standard across DBS cards, but worth knowing before you apply.

What happens to DBS Chromo when you turn 30?

Nothing changes immediately. You’ll keep earning up to 5% cashback or 1.3 miles per $1 for 3 months after your 30th birthday month.

From the 4th month onwards, though, things simplify: you’ll earn a flat 1.7% cashback or 1.3 miles per $1 on eligible local spend, with no minimum spend and no cap either way. You’ll also keep the 0 FX fees and the ability to toggle between cashback and miles.

Who’s eligible to apply?

You need to be between 21 and 29 years old. Once you turn 30, you can no longer apply, though you can keep an existing card past that age.

What’s the minimum income required?

$30,000 a year for Singaporeans and PRs, or $45,000 a year for foreigners.

What if I don’t hit the $500 monthly spend?

You’ll miss out on the 5% bonus cashback that month, but you’ll still earn the base 1% cashback on eligible local spend; no minimum required for that.

Can I get a supplementary card for a family member?

No, DBS Chromo doesn’t currently offer supplementary cards.

Does overseas spending earn cashback too?

No. You get 0 FX fees on overseas spend, but it doesn’t count towards your local cashback categories, so think of the FX waiver as the actual perk when you’re spending abroad.

How fast can I get approved?

If you apply via Singpass with your income details already on MyInfo, you can get instant approval.

What documents do I need to apply?

Check DBS’s Card Application Checklist for the full list, but generally proof of income is required unless it’s already verified via MyInfo.
