OUT OF SIGHT installation at the Civic District

No matter how long it’s been since we graduated from primary school, hopscotch is one of those games most of us will remember exactly how to play the moment we see it on the ground. Enter OUT OF SIGHT, an art installation that takes the shape of this nostalgic childhood game by artist Lawrence Weiner.

Don’t get me wrong – OUT OF SIGHT is not the same chalk-drawn shapes that you played with during recess or at the void deck, and it’s also not one of those “see no touch” artworks that are guarded behind velvet ropes. This text-based installation located in the cultural heart of the Civic District is there for you to play and interact with, and it’s all for free.

For the uninitiated, Lawrence Weiner is an American conceptual artist famed for his typographic installations and word art. No, not the kind you played with during computer class, but pieces that are manifested on walls and public faces and are meant to evoke some sort of meaning when they’re seen.

OUT OF SIGHT is one of those evocative installations that you can not only appreciate, but also interact with and participate in.

The hopscotch “mat” isn’t in the typical shape that you have in your head right now. It takes on a more ribbon-like silhouette and has Lawrence’s signature typography with open-ended phrases like “Imagined Things Can Be Altered To Suit” and “The Destination Is Straight On”.

The creative phrases might seem simple at first glance. Instead, they invite you to seek some retrospection as you’re hopping down the art piece as it’s meant to encourage you to go on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment in a judgement-free zone. They’re also not as randomly arranged as it would seem.

Everyone starts out “Assuming A Position” to contemplate their future and reflect upon themselves. Then they’ll “Presume A Destination” to envision their goals and dreams they want to achieve. You get the drift, we’re not going to spoil the entire thing for you; go check it out at National Gallery Singapore and The Arts House for yourself!
