Luna Lights Wonderland is a roving carnival that’s been making its way around Malaysia. Now, it’s popped up in Taman Bukit Layang Layang in Pasir Gudang, about a 30-minute drive from JB Checkpoint.
It’s open daily from 7pm-12am, although we recommend you come earlier to beat the queue. Tickets for adults cost RM15, while it’s RM8 for kids below 12 years old. If your kids are under a year old, they get to enter for free. Should you be short on cash, you can also pay using the Touch’n Go e-wallet app (App Store | Google Play).
You can expect to see light installations as well as a carnival. But there’s no need to feel guilty about wasting energy, the light installations are made using 1.4 million LED bulbs that use 90% less energy and last 25 times longer than regular light bulbs.
In fact, the Kedah iteration of the carnival was recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records for being the largest lighting festival in a park – so you can earn bragging rights on your visit.
What installations can I expect to see at Luna Lights Wonderland?

First things first, the light installations. The one in Pasir Gudang covers 7 acres and is separated into 5 major sections: Space, Ocean, Animals, Romance, and Misty Forest. To wow you even further, each theme comes with special lighting installations that truly take it up a notch.
Romance

For instance, at the Romance theme, there’ll be cute heart-shaped light displays for you to use as a backdrop with your loved ones. Life ain’t like the movies but you can recreate your favourite K-drama love endings with the horizon background to fuel your delulu.
Space

After taking all the shots for the Gram, head over to a galaxy not that far away at the Space section. It’s filled with plenty of installations of planets, spaceships, and rockets that remind us of Science Centre Singapore.

Plus, Star Wars geeks can pose with the huge BB-8, surrounded by tiny lights resembling the many stars out there in space.
Ocean

Not many people know that NASA started off exploring the ocean before specialising in space. See some of their findings IRL in the Ocean section. Huge sea creatures like dolphins and fishes can be spotted swimming across whimsical lights.
Misty Forest

Once done exploring the depths of the Ocean, head back up to the ground at the Misty Forest. Walk along the fog amidst the lights around you. While they definitely beautify the place, they also act as a safety visual so rest assured, you and your kids will be able to see where you’re walking.
Animals

Complete the sightseeing of the animal kingdom at, well, the Animal section. You can find displays of life-sized elephants “walking” in the glittery jungle, amongst a whole host of other animals. Do note that while its completely fine for your kids to pose next to them, gently remind them not to climb onto the displays.

All that walking and exploring the different themes is sure to work up an appetite. You’d be happy to know that there are alley food trucks serving up a myriad of street foods, should you want to grab a bite.
The food truck vendors change for each location, but some universal pasar malam food you can find are keropok lekor and goreng pisang. Should you crave something different, head over to Kouno House, a stall specialising in Japanese Muslim food to get your fix of takoyaki and sushi.

Kids who can’t stay still can burn off the calories at the bouncy castles. If the carnivals at past locations are something to go by, you can expect fun kiddy rides like bumper cars, as well as photo booths where you can snap some photos for the memories.
