There are two main things Singaporeans do to de-stress: shop and eat. The distraction of delicious food and the thrill of discovering new lobangs while shopping is one of the biggest reasons why we like hanging out at malls. Those looking for a new meet-up venue to hang with your friends at, check out these brand new and newly-renovated malls all around Singapore.

1. Design Orchard

Design Orchard is a low but sleek 2.5-storey building, the latest addition to our shopping belt. All about promoting the #supportlocal spirit, it stocks items from over 60 homegrown fashion, home decor, and skincare brands on the first level.

The second level is occupied by The Cocoon Space, a co-working space specially for local designers to collaborate in. It comes with a studio complete with professional sewing equipment and a whole library dedicated to fabrics.

There’s also a rooftop garden for those who wish to rest their feet after all that walking. The giant umbrellas there provide extra shade and the open space is great in accommodating large groups of friends. Built in an amphitheatre-style, its staggered stairs overlooking the cross junction in front is a perfect spot for people-watching.

The deck also doubles up as a performance space and fashion runway.

8. Funan (June 2019)

Funan is a treasure trove filled with good deals for sportswear and digital appliances. Don’t worry, that’s not gonna change, but the mall is set to have a major upgrade to make it super futuristic.

Come June 2019, Funan will be the first mall in Singapore to recommend stores to people based on their facial features. All you have to do is stand in front of the directory and the machine will detect your face, determine your gender and age before suggesting a list of shops that you’d potentially be interested.

The upgraded mall will also have a system that allows you to locate your car by scanning license plates.

To have a glimpse of what the future Funan will look like, hop over to Funan Showsuite, a space that has elements and facilities adapted from the upcoming mall. This includes having a cycling track on the ground level and vibrantly decorated rooms where artists can hold craft workshops and live performances.

Because shopping is such a popular activity amongst Singaporeans, avoiding the crowds in malls is unavoidable. But that doesn’t mean the experience of hunting down new buys and deals is any less fun. With these new and upcoming malls entering the scene, you’ll have even more food and shopping options that will make all the jostling worth it.
