Musicals in Singapore in 2019
Halfway into the year and we are all thinking the same thing – where has all the time gone? Before we know it, the all-too-familiar Christmas jingles will bombard our ears again. 2. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

This award-winning musical Sweeney Todd is finally making its way to Singapore. This musical has a thought-provoking storyline that portrays a darker side of human nature. Lea Salonga will be portraying Mrs Lovett in this grisly production, alongside Jett Pangan who will take the role of Sweeney Todd.

3. Peter Pan in Serangoon Gardens

This production brings a local twist on Peter Pan. Through this musical, you’ll follow The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up as he aspires to help Wendy and her brothers escape Singapore’s rocketing pressures of education.

4. CATS

This one’s for all the cat-lovers out there. CATS is one of the longest-running musicals in the history of Broadway and West End, with hit song “Memory” as one of its most well-known tunes. The story is based on T.S. Eliot’s book of poems “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats”.

5. Urinetown

Urinetown injects comedy into a dystopian setting, making it an easy-to-digest satire musical. The idea of paying to pee is ludicrous – but it may not be that far-fetched once you take into consideration that in the most expensive city that is Singapore, fines are meted out for littering and smoking.
This production is by Pangdemonium, helmed by local actors Adrian and Tracie Pang. This power couple take artistic direction into their own hands and have produced many plays since their company’s establishment in 2010.

6. Emily of Emerald Hill

Fusing themes of gender, tradition and Peranakan history, Emily of Emerald Hill is a thought-provoking and inspiring story about a woman in a Peranakan household in the 1930s, whose multiple roles as a mother, daughter-in-law, and housewife will be challenged by her culture and Straits-Chinese traditions.
This play starring Ivan Heng will follow her journey as she learns how to navigate difficult decisions and compulsion for success as a woman.

7. 1984

As far as dystopian novels go, George Orwell’s bestseller 1984 is one of the classics, and Singapore Repertory Theatre’s The Young Company will perform it as a mark of their graduation from a 2-year theatre training programme.
Winston Smith is constantly under the supervision of Big Brother, and every thought he has and any action he does will always be known. This play follows his fall to Big Brother when he commits Thoughtcrimes in a bid to seek love and freedom.

8. The Block Party

11. Beats On Pointe

12. Ballet Under The Stars
