These days at home, getting our meals settled via delivery or takeaway has become a convenient norm for many of us. But if you step back and think about it, this has caused our country-wide use of plastic to skyrocket – a problem that has kinda been swept under the rug amidst this COVID-19 pandemic.
Thankfully, here’s how you can finally go green with your food delivery orders aside from “not requesting cutlery”. foodpanda has recently launched a new subscription service where you can opt for reusable containers instead of the conventional disposables, and dine at home without contributing to unnecessary waste.
How it works:

Not-so-fun fact: Since the start of the Circuit Breaker, Singaporeans have produced enough additional plastic to match the weight of 4 fully-loaded Boeing 747 aircrafts – and that’s an awful lot.
foodpanda has recently partnered with barePack, the world’s first zero-waste reusable container system, for delivery meals that lets you minimise disposable waste from food packaging. And to take part, all you have to do is:
- Download the barePack app (iOS, Android) and create an account*
- Select Pick Up or Delivery on foodpanda and add your dishes to cart
- Use the code BAREPACK at checkout
- Scan the QR code that will be given upon arrival of your food, or at the pick-up point in the restaurant
- Follow the instructions given to return the container

Currently there are 9 participating outlets, including Dosirak at OUE Downtown and Somerset, Shake Farm HQ at Telok Ayer and Kopifellas Express at Beauty World. At present, the eateries are mainly limited to the CBD area, but your favourite restaurants might just be next on the list as the delivery app aims to offer this service to 20% of their F&B partners by the end of this year.
*A barePack account is now free for one month. Thereafter, a subscription is priced at $5/month, or $36/year.
Sustainable delivery in Singapore
Convenience and sustainability doesn’t always have to be one or the other. Do your part to reduce plastic waste, while enjoying the perks of having food delivered to your doorstep by hopping in on this sustainable initiative.
