Cafe-hopping, massages, and shopping are practically the holy trinity of a JB getaway. But if you’re looking to switch things up, Gentle Farms is a Singapore-owned working farm in Johor where you can spend the day feeding goats, meeting chicks, and getting a little closer to knowing where the food you consume on a daily basis actually comes from.
Located in Gelang Patah, the pasture-based farm has free-and-easy visits starting from just RM10 (~S$3.14)/pax. Plus, Gelang Patah is filled with things to do, so add this to your bucket list if you plan to travel there.
What is Gentle Farms?

First things first, Gentle Farms isn’t your usual petting zoo. It’s an actual working farm, where livestock and poultry are raised alongside the production of eggs, goat milk, chicken, and other farm-fresh produce.

The farm is big on ethical farming, sustainability, and animal welfare.They have an emphasis on small-batch production and slower animal growth instead of simply producing as much as possible to maximise profits.

As you wander around, expect to meet goats, pygmy goats, chickens, chicks, ducks, and quail. Goats and chickens are particularly important residents here, featuring in both the farm’s produce and visitor experiences.

Not the type to prefer guides when going on tours? The Free & Easy Farm Tour costs RM10 (~S$3.14)/pax and gives you approximately 45 minutes to roam around at your own pace.
You can explore the working-farm environment, observe the animals, and even feed some of them along the way. There’s no guide for this option, and walk-ins are generally accepted during opening hours, so you don’t have to plan your entire JB trip around it. At just over S$3/person, it’s also extremely wallet-friendly if you’re bringing the whole fam.
Get hands-on with their guided experiential farm tour

If simply looking at the animals isn’t enough for you, the Guided Experiential Farm Tour lets you get properly involved. Priced at RM35 (S$10.99)/pax, the approximately 1.5-hour experience is conducted with one of the Gentle Farms’ founders and requires an advance booking.
Activities in the tour include picking eggs, feeding and holding chicks, holding pygmy goats, and feeding goats “farmer style”. Essentially, your camera roll is about to become 80% baby animals, making your upcoming IG story updates extra adorable.

It isn’t all cute photo ops either. The experience has an educational side, teaching visitors about how animals are raised, what life on the farm is like, where our food comes from, and how food production actually works.

Food and agricultural education are a pretty big part of what Gentle Farms does. Rather than keeping the reality of farming behind the scenes, the farm encourages visitors to understand the journey their food takes before it lands on their plates.
Take its goats, for example. Gentle Farms raises them on a grass-based diet and sells Pure Grass Fed Goat Milk (RM6, ~S$1.87), which the farm describes as clean-tasting, creamy, and naturally rich in vitamins A and E.
Visitors may also get to feed and interact with the goats during their farm experience, giving you a more personal introduction to the source of some of the produce sold here.

While the animals are undeniably adorable, there’s more to the experience than collecting cute pics for the ‘Gram. The farm’s tours also touch on animal welfare, sustainable agriculture, food literacy, and ethical consumption.

If you’re planning to bring produce across the border, do note that some of the products fall under SFA’s list of prohibited items that you can’t bring into Singapore from Johor. These include eggs, broths, or oils containing meat extracts.
