If the aerial displays by the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) at each year’s National Day Parade (NDP) leave you gaping in awe, it’s time to get up close and personal with everything that it stands for. No, we don’t mean joining the RSAF right now, but getting a look behind the veil at the Singapore Air Force Museum (SAFM), which has just completed a major refresh and is now open.
SAFM is now open – perfect timing since it’s still the June holidays, if you’re looking for somewhere new and air-conditioned to take the kids to.
The museum is open every day except Wednesday, from 10am to 5pm.
As before, there will still be 9 galleries at the SAFM, including an Outdoor Gallery where RSAF aircraft are on display. Centred around the theme of “Defending Our Skies”, the refreshed museum takes visitors on an engaging, multi-sensory journey to explore both our RSAF story, as well as its evolutions and achievements.
Before that, you’ll start at the Welcome Gallery, where you’ll discover the mission, values, and vision of the RSAF, before tracing the story of the RSAF from its formation in 1968 at the Taking Flight gallery, up till the 2020s. All of the artefacts that you’ll come up close with in this gallery are the real deal, by the way.
Then, there’s New Heights, which takes you through the RSAF’s shift from airbase-centric to mission-oriented command. This is where you’ll get to see weapons systems, equipment, and aircraft models from across the almost-60 years of our air force’s history.
Don’t miss Full Spectrum – where projection mapping displays bring you into the war room to see how the RSAF responds to all sorts of missions, whether in times of war or peace.
The Viewing Gallery then tells the stories behind our aircraft and systems, demonstrating our Air Force’s commitment to defence, to overcome our island home’s vulnerabilities.
The RSAF is not all about aerial battle though, as Preserving Peace reveals. They also contribute to search and rescue, humanitarian, and peacekeeping efforts in the region and globally.
You’ll want to check out the Immersive Theatre too, where curved screens and seat vibrations let you have a first person point of view experience of what being in the cockpit is like.
The newest of their showcases can be found at Ever Ready, where you can walk through the RSAF’s current uniforms and vocations, with stories from serving airmen and airwomen, celebrating everyone who makes our air force what it is today.
There’s a whole line-up of fun and free activities in store for visitors to the SAFM – for starters, a personality test that will show you if you’re a decisive fighter jet or adaptable helicopter, amongst other results.
Plus, you’ll get to take home a specially designed postcard featuring your very own personality platform.
There are also colouring sheets with 4 exclusive designs, starring some of our RSAF’s own aerial machines.
You could also make your very own paper craft Black Knights fighter jet, or an RSAF airman or airwoman too.
Complete all 3 activities and commemorate the accomplishment with a photo of all your artwork. Then, follow and tag the SAFM (@singaporeairforcemuseum) to redeem an exclusive SAFM water bottle. Your account must be set to public to participate.
Do note that there are only 50 bottles available for redemption daily, and each visitor is only entitled to 1 redemption a day.
To get to the SAFM, you can take bus 90 from Tai Seng MRT Station, which takes approximately 20 minutes. Otherwise, you can take bus 94 from opposite Eunos Technolink, which is an 8-minute walk from Ubi MRT Station.
If you’re a Singapore Citizen (SC) or Permanent Resident (PR), tickets to the museum are free of charge. However, you’ll still have to book your tickets via the museum website.
For foreigners thinking of visiting the museum, tickets are priced at $8 for adults, and $5 for senior citizens, children below 6 years old, and students. You can also book your tickets on the SAFM website.
Even if it’s too late for you to join the RSAF, a trip to the refreshed SAFM may be just the inspiration your little one needs to one day join the titled ranks of our aerial defence.
