Which area should I stay in Langkawi?

If you need help deciding where to stay in Langkawi, we’ve rounded up some top spots to consider.

Kuah

Kuah is the capital of Langkawi with plenty of duty-free shopping complexes and outlets, where you can enjoy discounts ranging between 25%-75%. Some of the most popular items purchased include alcohol, electronics, perfume, chocolates, beauty products, household items, and sportswear. Meanwhile, foodies can check out the night markets at Pusur Bandar Kuah on Wednesdays and Saturdays to sample local street food.

Pantai Cenang

With a long beach that stretches over 2km, Pantai Cenang is one of the most popular areas for first-timers to stay in Langkawi. It’s got many bars and restaurants near the beach for you to enjoy a meal or drink while looking out into the ocean view. You can also try parasailing or join a jet ski tour, as there are plenty of water sports and activities around the area.

Pantai Tengah

Alternatively, if you’re not too keen on crowded places, you might want to check out Pantai Tengah instead. It comes with similar offerings of water activities, clubs, and eateries but serves as a less busy alternative to Pantai Cenang.

Tanjong Rhu

Tanjong Rhu is known for its beautiful beach, featuring clean white sand and crisp blue waters. At sunset, the sky transforms into a striking blend of orange, pink, and yellow, offering some of the best views in Langkawi.

Now that you’ve decided on your preferred area, we’ve also put together a selection of hotels in these locations and across other parts of Langkawi, making it easier for you to find the ideal accommodation for your trip.

Ulu luxe resort on Langkawi’s northern tip

For those who want to escape the crowds, Tanjong Rhu Resort is a luxury resort on the northern tip of Langkawi. It may be a 30-minute drive from the airport, but the hotel can arrange a private limousine to fetch you in style, at an additional cost.

Although the resort is hidden within an enclave on the island, that doesn’t mean you’ll be totally disconnected from civilisation – just rent a Sedan, MPV, or limo from the hotel to drive to attractions around Langkawi.

Tanjong Rhu Resort also organises sunset cruises and mangrove tours, if you want to see the wildlife and flora and fauna of Langkawi with your own eyes. There are even beachfront ATV rides for thrillseekers.

Those who decide to stay in can just take a dip in one of the 2 pools: the Sands Pool, an ozone-treated swimming pool, and the Sunset Pool, a 60m freshwater pool for those with sensitive skin.

“Huh, but not expensive meh?” you may be thinking. Prices start from RM850/night for the Damai Suite. That’s the usual rate for a 3- or 4- star hotel in Singapore. But here, you’re getting a separate living area and small balcony with views of the central garden courtyard with the Damai Suite. Now, we think that’s getting your money’s worth.

The resort even offers babysitting services, so parents can enjoy a much-needed vacation with some extra help.

It’s also a pretty affordable option in Pantai Cenang, with rates starting from RM167/night. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from plenty of water activities on the beach like jetskiing and parasailing. At night, nocturnal travellers can knock down a few beers at the many beach bars that make up the Langkawi party scene.

Pantai Cenang is the tourist hotspot in Langkawi due to its many beach bars, shopping options, and budget-friendly hotels – so trust us, you’ll find yourself heading there during your trip to Langkawi. For those who want to be in the middle of the action, check into Arch Studio Cenang. It’s located just a 5-minute walk from Pantai Cenang.

This is where you get to live your Gossip Girl Humphrey family dreams, because the loft-style rooms look like they’re right out of Brooklyn. Prices are pretty affordable, too, starting from RM250/night for a Junior Studio, which comes with a balcony that faces the pool.

Families or bigger groups can book the King Studio Suite (RM350) or Family Studio Suite (RM620). The latter comes with 2 queen-sized beds, a living room with sofa, and an in-room pantry. It’s also located on the ground floor, with direct access to the pool so the kiddos can jump in first thing in the morning.

8. Ombak Villa

Beach resort with traditional Malay architecture

The interiors combine contemporary design and traditional Malay architecture.

Ombak Villa is a chio accommodation option with resort-style rooms at a fraction of the price. Think luxury resorts back home like Capella Singapore or Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa.

Don’t believe us? An Ombak Suite Double or Twin costs RM400/night, and you can even book out the Seroja Suite from RM1,500/night. The latter is a gorgeous 1-bedroom villa with a garden and private balcony that looks out to views of the Andaman Sea.

Best of all, it’s just a 5-minute drive from the airport – which makes it great for weekend trips, because you’ll get to your resort in a jiffy and get a head start on exploring.

9. The Smith House

4-minute drive from the airport

Image credit: The Smith House Langkawi

If proximity to the airport is one of the most important factors when choosing a hotel for you, The Smith House would be your best bet. It’s located just a 4-minute drive from the airport – or 13 minutes, should you choose to walk.

But location is not its only selling point. It’s an Insta-worthy boutique hotel with photogenic spots in every corner, and there’s even a lounge space with an in-house library for days you decide to stay in.

Image credit: The Smith House Langkawi

Our favourite feature of the hotel, though, is the rooftop swimming pool with scenic views of Langkawi’s surrounding mountains. We don’t know about you, but it looks like the perfect spot to spend an afternoon; chope one of the loungers, grab a glass of juice, and curl up with a good book.

Rates start from RM190/night for a Standard Twin Room. And hey, you get to save on taxi costs from the airport too, if you’re feeling up for a leisurely stroll.

10. The Danna Langkawi

For those keen on splurging for a special occasion, like a honeymoon, The Danna Langkawi will give you an unforgettable experience. Prices start from RM1,335/night at this 5-star resort, comprising luxurious suites with elegant colonial-style architecture. Think high ceilings, canopy beds, and a balcony granting access to unobstructed beach views.

One of the highlights is none other than the suites’ huge bathrooms, to truly give you a taste of fancy living. Nothing says atas quite like his and her vanity areas and a freestanding tub to relax and have a soak in. The cherry on top is the floor-to-ceiling bathroom window right next to lush greenery outside. That way, you can feel like you’re bathing in the rainforest while staying safe from swarming pests.

11. Berjaya Resort

Overwater villas & rainforest chalets

Berjaya Resort may only be a 20-minute drive from Langkawi International Airport, but it feels like another world altogether. After all, it’s nestled on Burau Bay, a quiet stretch of beaches on the Western coast of the island where access is restricted to guests staying in one of the luxury resorts here.

The Boat House Bar is nestled right on the private beach.

It goes without saying that guests get to chillax at the private beach. Head to the beachside Boat House Bar for a cocktail (RM15) – we’d choose a quintessentially beachy drink like a Tequila Sunrise, Mai Tai or Pina Colada – alongside the hearty BBQ Grilled Chicken Burger (RM57).

Accommodation here comes in the form of overwater bungalows in the Premier Suite On Water (from RM2,114/night) – almost like you’re in the Maldives, without the travel time. If you’re more of a forest person, ground yourself in their Ubud-style rainforest chalets from RM586.20/night.

Private island resort with beach-connected suites

Image credit: Rebak Island Resort & Marina

It’s a misconception that you have to be Richard Branson in order to stay on a private island. In Langkawi, your billionaire vacation dreams are within reach at Rebak Island Resort & Marina. Rooms start at an attainable RM467.74/night for the Premium Garden View room.

Should you want an upgrade, there’s a total of 7 room categories here – you can book a sea-view room from RM562.24/night and a suite with direct access to the beach from RM827.65/night.

With the resort located in the midst of the surrounding jungles and hidden beaches, we don’t blame you if you never want to leave. Thankfully, there are beach bars and restaurants in the resort itself. Indulge in a meal at all-day Senari Sea View Restaurant, complete with al fresco dining that overlooks the ocean.

There’s also a spa and sauna on-site to treat yourself to a pampering sesh like the tai tai you are, without ever leaving the resort.
