Whenever I’m out with friends, and no one’s ready to call it a night yet, we always end up asking, “Where to next?” You’ve probably been in the same situation, only to end up camping in a cafe to continue chatting. But sometimes, not every hangout has to come with an expensive drink.
Luckily for you, we’ve compiled a list of public spaces around Singapore to chill, chat, and hang out without spending a cent. You might even recognise some of these spots hidden in plain sight, and they’re all accessible to the public. So the next time your group chat starts debating where to go after dinner, you’ll have plenty of options up your sleeve.

After a long day of shopping along Orchard Road with your besties, your feet might need a breather, so give yourself a break by heading to Design Orchard. There’s a rooftop garden overlooking the busy streets, so you can do a little people-watching as you chat away with your friends.

Everyone knows that the library is a great place to pick up a book and relax, but at the National Library Building, the space to relax goes beyond the library walls. Right at the entrance, there’s a large sheltered area that’s free for the public to come by and have a seat. If you’ve borrowed some books from the library and want to enjoy the breeze as you read, this is the perfect spot for you too.

Walk a little bit from the National Library Building, and you’ll come across Odeon Towers. Looking like a mini mesa in the middle of the concrete jungle, this open area leading to the tower lobby is open for the public to visit, take a seat, and enjoy a quiet moment.

If you find yourself around Bugis, head over to Guoco Midtown when you need a spot to sit and recharge. The development is home to multiple spacious plazas dotted with greenery, making it a surprisingly peaceful spot in the middle of the city. And with large ceiling fans circulating the air, you can cool off even on Singapore’s sweltering afternoons.

Guoco Group has also brought its public space concept beyond Bugis, with similar pockets of respite at Tanjong Pagar. At Guoco Tower, you’ll find a sheltered event space lined with benches and even a large urban park right in the heart of the CBD. With its lush greenery, it’s the perfect spot to let your eyes rest after hours spent staring at a work screen.
Singapore’s most iconic man-made waterfall is undoubtedly the Rain Vortex at Jewel Changi Airport, but you’d be mistaken if you think that’s the only one around. Tucked away in the Marina One Green Heart, you’ll find another striking waterfall to look at.
Settle in for a hang-out session with the waterfall as your backdrop – there are many free seating areas around the garden for you to unwind too. And when you’re in the mood to stretch your legs, take a stroll along the 2km-long walkway and soak in the greenery at your own pace.
For a bird’s-eye view of the CBD, CapitaSpring is one of Raffles Place’s most distinctive office towers. Beyond its eye-catching facade, this building has a Green Oasis on Levels 17 to 20 and a Sky Garden at Level 51, free for the public to access and enjoy the breeze, though you’ll have to make a reservation in advance to visit these areas.
But if you’re already in the area, don’t worry if you haven’t booked a slot – there are also seating areas on the ground floor that you can pop by anytime for a quick pause in the middle of the city bustle.
There’s lots to explore at the Punggol Digital District, but when you need a break from all the wandering, rest your legs at Punggol Coast Mall. The plaza here offers loads of seating options, from large steps to benches sprawled across the area.
Head a little closer to the coast, and you’ll find Northshore Plaza, a mall in the heartlands with a view of the sea. With an open-air concept, you’ll be able to bask in the refreshing sea breeze as you shop and eat. And if you really want to get even closer to the water, just continue your stroll along the Punggol Park Connector, where uninterrupted ocean views make for a calming end to your walk.
Buangkok residents can also head down to Sengkang Grand Mall for a quick break. Inside, the community plaza is bathed in natural light streaming through the skylight, making it a bright and airy spot to sit back and unwind. And if you’re coming with your kids who are bursting with energy, there’s also a playground at the entrance where they can run around while you catch your breath.

Malls aren’t the only place where you can hang out; give the community centre a try for a change. There’s a large sheltered plaza on the ground floor of Fernvale Community Centre, with benches scattered around for groups to gather and catch up at a leisurely pace. Plus, this community centre is right next to The Seletar Mall, in case you’re looking for a place to chill after shopping without having to spend $9 on a drink.

Over at Admiralty, you’ll find Kampung Admiralty, a “modern kampung” built with seniors and the community in mind. Choose to relax at the community plaza on the ground floor, or take a stroll at the rooftop community garden.

Residents staying along stations on the Thomson-East Coast line may already be familiar with Lentor Modern Mall, one of the latest malls in the northern region. Right outside Lentor MRT leading to the mall, you’ll find a spacious open-air area, complete with stone benches where you can take a break before continuing your journey.

When it comes to shopping in the east, you can’t leave PLQ out of your list. Right outside the mall is the massive PLQ plaza, where you’ll find seating areas alongside outdoor food stalls for you to grab a quick bite while you rest your feet.

After making laps around the jogging track or in the pool, you’ll definitely need a moment to recharge. Thankfully, Our Tampines Hub has a ton of seating areas all around – whether it’s the benches along Festive Walk or the stools around the complex, there’s always somewhere to sit back and catch your breath.

There are tons of thrills to be found at Downtown East, but after a whole day of excitement, you’ll be glad to know there are seating areas for some downtime. You can find these spots in E!Avenue and E!Hub, with benches along the mall corridors and other dedicated seating areas scattered around the complex.

You’ve probably heard of House+ Bubble, the 24-hour spa that opened in Jurong back in March 2026. But beyond this relaxation spot, Perennial Business City also offers plenty of public seating areas that anyone can use, with comfy sofas for you to get comfortable. Getting here is also fuss-free – there’s a link bridge from JEM that lets you stroll over with ease.
Just one MRT stop away from Perennial Business City in Jurong East, you’ll find West Mall, located just a short walk from Bukit Batok MRT Station. Once a simple open space, the plaza has since been transformed into a more comfortable, sheltered hangout spot after a major renovation. And when it gets too hot, just step inside and head to the newly renovated Bukit Batok Library for a cool, quiet escape.

Beauty World has tons of delicious eateries for a dinner hangout with your makan kakis, but once you’re done with your meal, you can continue your yap session at The LINQ @ Beauty World. Even from afar, you can’t miss the illuminated staircase with seating areas – rest assured that you won’t be chilling in the dark even at night.
When your budget doesn’t allow a European getaway, check out Geneo at Kent Ridge instead. Its indoor plaza, The Canopy, features beautiful timber pillars stretching all the way up to the high ceilings.
Nature lovers may prefer The Seed, Geneo’s outdoor garden, where you can lounge among the greenery.

If you’re ever in the one-north area and need somewhere to decompress, make your way to the Wilmar International Limited Headquarters. There’s a garden with water features like ponds and fountains on the ground floor, and benches for you to sit back and relax. Don’t worry, this may be an office building, but the garden is open to the public.

The Rail Corridor is great for a long walking workout, but under Singapore’s blistering sun, a few pit stops are practically essential. If you’re around the Buona Vista node, consider resting your legs at Elementum, which sits along the trail with a sheltered plaza and seating areas. And for some extra greenery, there’s also a little garden to enjoy before continuing your walk.

You may know Rochester for its cluster of pre-war colonial bungalows. While you’re in the area to admire their architecture, make a pit-stop at the Rochester Commons building – there’s a semi-sheltered plaza for you to take a seat and escape the sun.
Bring your furkids out for a playdate at One Holland Village, and once your shopping spree at the mall’s many pet-friendly stores is done and dusted, give your furbaby’s little paws a break at a seating area. There are even swing seats for a cosy little sit-down before you continue your day out together.
Hangout spots are a dime a dozen, but if you thought free spots were hard to come by, you’d be mistaken. The next time you’re looking for somewhere new to chill with your loved ones, head down to one of these public spaces near you.
