Katie Makkai - Pretty

I love this poem and its author. I love her passion about the subject at hand, and its outright defiance against the stereotype that all women are vain and should do everything they can to look pretty – stock up on cosmetics, fix their teeth, etcetera.

I think that females in the 21st century should have the liberty to choose. They should have the right of choice. If they want to look pretty, they can. If they want to disregard it, they should. If they want to doll up everyday, by all means, they should go for it. If they couldn’t care less about how their hair looks, they should have the right to do that too.

Prettiness isn’t anti-feminist. It’s okay to want to look pretty, just as it is to not want to look pretty. But prettiness ranks below many things, such as health and overall mental stability and happiness.

We should just all learn to accept others’ wishes and their decisions, and prioritise our own.
