With half of December already past us, some are already living their best lives on our overseas sojourn to holiday hotspots like Bangkok and Japan. Not all is bleak and boring for those still stranded in sunny Singapore, though.
Much like a trip to the newly-relocated Hay Dairies Farms, you’ll be able to swing by the National Gallery’s Keppel Centre for Art Education for a day of family fun. This one’s perfect for nurturing young Picassos, and it’s even got free entry, so there’s no reason not to book a playdate before the school holidays end.
The Keppel Centre for Art Education is reopening from 16th December 2023, as a permanent space within National Gallery Singapore. They’re inviting families to experience 7 artsy zones, all lined with interactive exhibits for the kiddos to get their lil’ hands on.

First up, children can experiment with mixing different primary colours to create secondary colours at the A Brush With Forest Fire activity. Equipped with special paint brushes, they’ll get to put out virtual forest fires in an augmented reality game while learning about basic colour theory.
The kids will then get to create their very own abstract artwork at the Illuminate! Zone. They’ll get to project shapes and symbols on a screen, for a visual representation of their work. Remember, there are no wrong answers when it comes to crafting a masterpiece, so encourage them to let their artistic vision run wild.
Forget finger paints and crayons; here, the kids will also get to express themselves in art mediums that they don’t often have access to. This pushes them to broaden their creativity into a whole different plane.
At the Expression Workshop, they’ll get invited to mess around with 3D doodling pens that tap into technology to come up with unique sculptures. Afterwards, the Makers Studio guides them towards making a collage made out of varying materials, as they pick up pattern making and problem-solving skills.
The Portrait Gallery’s a must-visit if you’d like to update your feed with snaps of you and your child goofing around. After creating personalised portraits using magnetic props, adorn yourselves with the many props provided and strike a pose for a mirror selfie.

There are also a bunch of drop-in activities and workshops at the Keppel Centre for Art Education that you can sign your little one up for. These include their opening special DIY Hat-Making Activity which is only available from 16th-17th of December 2023, as well as live storytelling sessions that end with drawing sessions and art hunts.
If you’re not jetting off for the remainder of December, don’t worry. From educational kid-friendly workshops that make the best of the holidays, to enriching exhibits like the ones at Keppel Centre for Art Education, there’s plenty to do right here in Singapore before the new year.
Although the centre is accepting walk-ins, it’s highly encouraged to register for a time slot on their website to guarantee entry into the exhibitions.
