Judging by the crowded aisles of all Don Don Donki stores, the hype surrounding this affordable Japanese supermarket chain is still alive and well. Look at us – we’re brimming with excitement for their new outlet at Clarke Quay Central on 1st August 2019

With a makeup corner stocked with cult Japanese brands and a fully-stocked delicatessen perfect for busy office workers, no doubt that Clarke Quay will fast become our new favourite haunt. From a Hokkaido dessert stall to live teppanyaki counter, here’s everything worth checking out at the newest Don Don Donki.

Food court – Hokkaido sweets, gyudon & tonkatsu

Don Don Donki Food Court

Don Don Donki isn’t like any other regular supermarket – at their Food Court, there’s a variety of F&B stalls that serve up Japanese dishes like Negitoro Don (tuna rice bowl) and Mazesoba (dry mixed ramen).

Shiroi Tonkatsu

For the Clarke Quay store, you can try a range of sweet and savoury bites from 6 different stalls. We’re eyeing Shiroi Tonkatsu for its Hokkaido Tonkatsu ($12.80) – deep-fried and breaded pork cutlet that pair perfectly with fluffy Japanese rice.

Sugimoto Bonta

Otherwise, Sugimoto Bonta is serving up Gyudon (from $11.90) which includes a heap of thinly sliced beef that’s been slow-cooked for hours with dashi soup.

Hokkaido Milk Bubble Tea

For those with a sweet tooth, Hokkaido Melt uses creamy Hokkaido milk in all their desserts – must-trys include their Snow Cream Parfait ($6.50), Snow Pancake ($8), and Hokkaido Milk Bubble Tea ($5)

Other stalls to try include Pasta Holic for its Japanese pasta dishes, Doraya for its rice bowls, and Kanda Soba for its mazesoba

Sweet Potato Factory

Sweet Potato Factory

Don Don Donki’s sweet potatoes constantly draw in a massive crowd and this Sweet Potato Factory is bound to do just that. But despite the long lines, it’s too hard to resist the wafting scent of baked sweet potatoes in the air.

Sweet potato

The wait is entirely justified: their Sweet Potatoes ($3 each) are flown straight in from Japan and have a caramelised honey flavour.

Live teppanyaki & bar

Live teppanyaki

There’s even a live teppanyaki corner where you can get your food freshly grilled on a hotplate. While it’s a cosy space that seats 11, the chefs will be grilling right in front of you. With hot dishes like Chicken Steak Combo ($13.90) and Half Pound Beef Steak ($24.90), you’ll have a tough time figuring out what to feast on.

Salmon teppanyaki

One specialty is their Salmon Chan Chan Yaki ($16.90) that wraps salmon, mixed veggies, and miso paste in foil to infuse all ingredients. Their Unagi & Egg Omelette ($15.90) also looks equally tasty, served on an iron plate with a generous drizzle of teriyaki sauce.

Donki bar

There’s also a nearby bar, Drink Drunk Donki, which serves up drinks like Maker’s Mark Highball for $7 and Suntory Premium Malt for $6.50.

Opening hours: 12PM-12AM

Late-night delicatessen

Delica

The Clarke Quay Central store also has a fully-stocked Delica. While you would’ve enjoyed the food thoroughly at other Donki stores, the menu here offers a slew of new items to try.

Delica food

And their new offerings are bound to satiate any Japanese food cravings, with savoury dishes like Thick Cut Beef Tongue Bento ($23.90) and Hokkaido Snow White Pork Katu Bento ($14.90). Their Crab Mesi ($14.90) is equally appetising, as a heap of fresh crabmeat with ikura (salmon roe) scattered over.

Cosmetics Zone

They’ve got massive cosmetic counters in Japan, where you can hunt down practically every lipstick shade out there. And now you can do just that at the Cosmetics Zone, a makeup corner where beauty gurus can browse a huge range of Japanese brands – favourites like Chifure, Bourjois, and Nailholic.
