Best CrossFit & HIIT gyms in Singapore
You only need to witness the volume of athleisure wear and post-workout boomerangs on social media to realise that there’s a fitness craze raging in Singapore. But while classes such as spin and pilates have become all the rage, there’s nothing like CrossFit and HIIT to really burn those festive calories with an intense workout that includes cardio and strength training.
To get you started, we’ve sussed out a list of the best CrossFit and HIIT gyms in Singapore for you to sweat buckets at.
What’s the difference between CrossFit & HIIT training?
CrossFit is high-intensity strength training that focuses on exercises that combine weightlifting, gymnastics, and cardio workouts. The workout is structured into 4 parts: warm-up, strength or skill training, WOD (workout of the day), and cool down. The WOD is the most competitive aspect of the training, where you’ll need to complete a set number of rounds as quickly as possible or in a set time frame.
Meanwhile, HIIT (high-intensity interval training) places more emphasis on cardio workouts. These are usually done in short, quick bursts with many repetitions. The workout is usually broken up into one high-impact exercise followed by a lower-intensity workout for recovery.
HIIT vs CrossFit – which is better for beginners?
If you haven’t ventured into high-intensity workouts, we suggest starting with HIIT first since the exercises are usually done in shorter durations. CrossFit can be more intense and is typically recommended for those who have been consistently training and are ready for a new challenge.
What do I need to prepare/bring for CrossFit or HIIT?
Of course, you’ll need the basics, like extra clothes and proper training shoes, to optimize your workout performance. You could also pack additional items you think you may need, such as:
- Athletic wear: You’ll want to wear a breathable and cooling material, especially when doing such high-intensity workouts.
- Gym shoes: Wear a supportive pair of shoes that’s lightweight and cushions all the intense movements you’ll be doing.
- Water bottle: Carry a reusable water bottle around so you can hydrate yourself during breaks or in between workouts. Make sure you fill it to the brim beforehand, as not all gyms have water coolers or refill stations.
- High-protein snacks/meals: We all know that protein and working out go hand in hand to help with muscle growth and quicker recovery. Stash some high-protein bars or energy gels, or you can also meal-prep a healthy lunch with chicken breast, brown rice, and leafy greens. Find out more about protein powder.
- Outdoor essentials: If your CrossFit or HIIT classes are conducted outdoors, remember to bring sunglasses, sunscreen, or caps to protect yourself from SG’s unforgiving weather.
- Shower essentials: it’s good to bring travel-sized shampoo or shower gels, just in case the gym you’re visiting doesn’t provide them. Remember your facial wash to clean off all the sweat and gunk after your workouts, and maybe throw a sweat and bath towel in your gym bag just in case there’s none at the gym.
