What do I need for a boxing class?

While most gyms should be able to provide a basic kit, such as shared boxing gloves and wraps, it’s best to get your own once you’re serious about the sport to ensure a better fit and hygiene. Here’s what you’ll want to pack in your gym bag:

  • Boxing shorts: regular gym shorts are enough but if you’re concerned about hip mobility, boxing shorts have wider leg holes that don’t restrict movement.
  • Boxing gloves: there are 3 types of boxing gloves you can get:
    • Training gloves: best for beginners to use for general training and bag work.
    • Sparring gloves: has extra padding for protection during jabs and punches.
    • Competition gloves: personalised and moulded to fighter’s fists.

Gloves come in 8oz-16oz sizes:

  • 8oz-10oz: lightweight gloves meant for use in the competition ring.
  • 12oz-14oz: most common training gloves for bag work.
  • 16oz: meant for sparring or for heavier boxers.
  • Hand wraps: used to absorb sweat inside boxing gloves, as well as supports and cushions knuckles and bones during punches.
  • Boxing shoes: these are lighter than regular trainers to aid in quick footwork and provide stability during a sparring match. There are 3 types to choose from:
    • Low-top: less ankle support but ideal for faster footwork.
    • Mid-top: ideal for the average boxer for its flexibility and support.
    • High-top: extra support for the ankle, mostly used by competitive boxers.
  • Headgear: this is optional if you’re not sparring, but if you’re planning to compete in the contact sport, this is a must to keep your head protected from blows.
  • Mouthguard: again, optional if you’re not sparring, but otherwise they’ll prevent serious injury to your lips and teeth during a fight.

Is boxing a dangerous sport?

It’s a contact sport so there will always be some risk of injury, especially when you’re sparring with a partner. But you can minimise risk by taking precautions such as putting on protective gear and training under a professional coach. Make sure you master basic techniques first – defense is just as important as offense – before gradually increasing the intensity of your training.

(Closed) FX Boxing Club

While we all wish to be like Rocky, sometimes the violence of the sport can be intimidating. FX Boxing Club focuses on real-life movements instead of sparring matches. There is zero to low contact as there is no getting into a ring, so those who just want to box and focus on functional fitness, this is the gym for you.

What are the best exercises to strengthen my hands for boxing?

You’re required to use your fists a lot in boxing classes, so you will want to incorporate specific exercises to help prep and strengthen your hands. Here are some exercises that can help condition your hands, improve grip strength, and reduce the risk of injury.

Wrist curls: Sit down and rest your forearm on your thigh. As you hold the dumbbell, make sure your wrist is facing upwards, and then start curling the weight inwards by bending your wrists. Repeat for 8-12 repetitions.

Reverse wrist curls: Opposite to the wrist curls, keep your forearm and palms facing down and then flex your wrists upwards. This focuses on targeting the extensor muscles of the forearm.

Knuckle Push-Ups: This exercise is great for improving wrist stability. Essentially, it’s the same as a regular push-up but instead of using your palms, you’ll use your knuckles to push yourself up from the floor. Repeat 6-10 repetitions.

Hand Grippers: Squeeze the gripper for several repetitions or hold it for a specific duration. This exercise targets the muscles in your hands and forearms, improving your ability to maintain a strong grip during punches.

Affordable boxing gyms in Singapore

Throwing a good punch to let out all that stress can be one of the most liberating things to do.

If you’re a gym bro who’s over lifting heavy weights, book a boxing session instead – and who knows, you just might start to lose all your hair and become the next One Punch Man.
