While most gyms should be able to provide a basic kit, such as shared boxing gloves and wraps, it’s best to get your own once you’re serious about the sport to ensure a better fit and hygiene. Here’s what you’ll want to pack in your gym bag:
Gloves come in 8oz-16oz sizes:
It’s a contact sport so there will always be some risk of injury, especially when you’re sparring with a partner. But you can minimise risk by taking precautions such as putting on protective gear and training under a professional coach. Make sure you master basic techniques first – defense is just as important as offense – before gradually increasing the intensity of your training.
Several instructors are from overseas, and are world champions in their respective martial arts.

Besides learning actual fighting and self-defence techniques, you’ll also go through strength, cardio, and conditioning exercises with equipment like airdyne bikes and power racks. Over 1,000 classes each week gives you plenty of options to choose your preferred time and day for a training sesh.
Boxing rookies are also welcome to sign up for a free 30-minute trial lesson at any of the 6 Evolve MMA outlets in Singapore to try out a class in combat before committing to the various membership plans (from $269).

While we all wish to be like Rocky, sometimes the violence of the sport can be intimidating. FX Boxing Club focuses on real-life movements instead of sparring matches. There is zero to low contact as there is no getting into a ring, so those who just want to box and focus on functional fitness, this is the gym for you.
You’re required to use your fists a lot in boxing classes, so you will want to incorporate specific exercises to help prep and strengthen your hands. Here are some exercises that can help condition your hands, improve grip strength, and reduce the risk of injury.
Wrist curls: Sit down and rest your forearm on your thigh. As you hold the dumbbell, make sure your wrist is facing upwards, and then start curling the weight inwards by bending your wrists. Repeat for 8-12 repetitions.
Reverse wrist curls: Opposite to the wrist curls, keep your forearm and palms facing down and then flex your wrists upwards. This focuses on targeting the extensor muscles of the forearm.
Knuckle Push-Ups: This exercise is great for improving wrist stability. Essentially, it’s the same as a regular push-up but instead of using your palms, you’ll use your knuckles to push yourself up from the floor. Repeat 6-10 repetitions.
Hand Grippers: Squeeze the gripper for several repetitions or hold it for a specific duration. This exercise targets the muscles in your hands and forearms, improving your ability to maintain a strong grip during punches.
Throwing a good punch to let out all that stress can be one of the most liberating things to do.
If you’re a gym bro who’s over lifting heavy weights, book a boxing session instead – and who knows, you just might start to lose all your hair and become the next One Punch Man.
