An Average Place
As a person who lived around the Serangoon area, it was inevitable for me to eventually dine at Mad Jack, and although not sorely disappointed by anything, there was also nothing impressive on the menu for my taste buds.
I have tried their fish and chips, burger, and their chicken wing sets and while the portions are slightly above normal, their taste doesn't quite fall anywhere above that. Other than their main dishes, their chocolate cake was also decent - I have had better ones, but the one I had wasn't the worst either.
However, they do have a lot of ongoing discounts and promotion at that specific branch, so checking out the place is definitely worth a shot since their prices are really quite worth what they sell at those times.
I had dinner with my family here a few months back and I must say, I am fairly disappointed by the poor service offered by the outlet at Jalan Kayu after having read many good reviews about it.
Although the place wasn't crowded at the time of visit, the service was slow and the food arrived later than expected. Though that was somewhat excusable, the food itself was horrible. I got a rock hard well done steak even though I asked for a medium cooked one. The pasta which my brother had was cold and the sauce was diluted, it tasted like a result of adding too much water into a ready-made sauce.
Overall, I feel that the price paid does not reflect the bad quality of food and service my family received. Although I feel that the ambience was alright, the quality of the food was horrendous and I probably will not visit that particular outlet again.
THE HOLY PAVLOVA
This was the place where my friend and I discovered the holy grail of desserts: the Pavlova (which we dub the Holy Pavlova because it deserves that title). I have a really sweet tooth and this was the perfect dish with loads of fruits on the top, a fluffy yet slightly crunchy outer shell as well as a whole dollop of cream in it. The desserts in general come in really generous servings and have a really rich taste. Other than the dessert, my friend and I usually go for the cheese fries as well cos they give huuuge servings of cheese
Affordable and worthy
I had my dinner there a few months ago, and they had a student meal promotion going on then.
The menu were kinda unclear, and me and my friend kept having to ask really silly questions, which surprisingly the waiter patiently answered which impressed me a lot.
The food isn't bad, and for the student meal I had I think it was pretty worth it.
One thing though, my friend found a strand of hair in her pasta, and they offered to change another plate for us. Still kind of disturbing though.
I like the seats though, it's kind of enclosed and gives you personal space to talk to your friends.
A really good place to visit if you're kinda tight on a budget but still want a good meal and chat with your friends.
Pretty good for that price!
Mad Jack is definitely one of the more pocket friendly places in town and I've been there on a few occasions with my friends. My favourite thing to order is the lamb. The tender piece of lamb is marinated and seasoned well and you can taste the subtle hints of rosemary used.
On one occasion, my friends and I had ordered a serving of cheese fries. And when it arrived, it was more like 4 servings, it was enormous. I won't say that I was very impressed my the fries though. I'm pretty sure if I had a pack of frozen fries and a deep fryer I'd probably be able to replicate the dish myself. But for the sheer quantity that they served, our money was probably worth it. If you're on a budget than perhaps you can give Mad Jack a try!
I am personally a fan of Western food, but the first time I ate at Mad Jack, it turned me off Western food for a good few days.
I tried their spaghetti, and I believe it is safe to say that Mad Jack served the lousiest spaghetti I've ever tasted in my entire life. Their spaghetti sauce was way too diluted; the spaghetti itself was undercooked, and the portion itself was too small for a proper meal.
Also, the service was too slow. They took quite a long time to prepare my spaghetti and my friend's Fish and Chips, although the place was quite empty when we got there.
Against logical reasoning, I tried Mad Jack again a few months after. Thankfully, my second experience was more rewarding. The spaghetti turned out better tasting than the first time, but it wasn't exactly anything out of the ordinary.
Expect to have a light meal here, not delicious food. Mad Jack's prices can be quite cheap when there are promotions.
With such varying differences in terms of its food standards, I don't think I will be returning to Mad Jack anytime soon.
yucky fish and chips
I have never been to a place that has the worse fish and chips ever and sadly according to Mad Jack's menu, it is one of the top favorites and the recommended dish. It's either they were playing a joke or that i was just very unlucky for that day to be ordering such a horrible fish and chips. For those of you familiar with fish and chips, i'm sure you will relate it to crunchy fish batter and succulent chips. But what i had on my plate was way the opposite and a meal meant for the rubbish bin instead.
I was totally horrified when i dig in to my fish and chips, first of all the fish felt like it had been kept forever. It had this very strong pungent smell and the batter for the fish was so oily that i felt like i was drinking oil instead. It was not just the fish that spoiled my mood, but the chips as well. The chips served to me was soggy and tasteless. It not only ruined my mood but also my dinner and i left the place hungry and angry.
Nice tea time promotion menu!
If you are looking to eat at a place that is constantly having promotions and cheap lunch or dinner set menus, etc., then Mad Jack would be a possibility that you’d want to choose. From student menus, to lunch promotions for selected items, and even to a late afternoon tea time menu, is there any other promotion that Mad Jack is missing?
Yes, so many promotions, so much money that could be saved! But what about the food? I would like to begin with their spaghetti bolognaise, which, to me, tasted really unique from an average plate of spaghetti bolognaise, but in a bad way. What’s more, the portion was pretty big! That was my very first experience at Mad Jack, ever. Never stepped in again until I took notice of the tea time menu.
The tea time menu was really value for money, because it was only $3 or $4 odd and you could choose a dish and a drink (limited to the promotion items). I chose to have chocolate pancakes and a glass of iced ribena. The portion was reasonable for just $4. The pancakes came drizzled in chocolate sauce and served with a scoop of ice-cream. Tasted quite good, in complete contrast from the spaghetti I had during my first time at Mad Jack.
I would like to disclaim, however, that I have not come here for lunch or dinner eversince, though. Only tea, so far. Maybe in time to come, I will give their lunch or dinner items a chance again! But without a doubt, I definitely recommend their tea time set, which should be in the late afternoon, like 3pm. Yes, go give that a try!
Quite alright, but nothing special sadly.
Good service, but okay food. That pretty much sums up what I feel Mad Jack is, so I do not quite understand what the whole hype about this place is about. At times, I feel as if the food is quite overpriced for what I get, and the ambience is not too great at times.
However, I really like the whole set up of this restaurant. Using the more modernized style of ordering, (by bringing the order to the counter), I feel that it really saves time for customers, as they do not have to wait for a waiter. Furthermore, the food is quite alright, so i do not have many qualms when I come here to have dinner with my friends.
