(Closed) Hai Bin Prawning Hot
Prawn fishing that allows bbq of your live catches making it an ideal place for famalies and gatherings. On September 9th, they had to close due to a drastic and sudden increase in rent.
Blessed with the humid weather, prawning in the day or afternoons in Singapore may not be too bright an idea as the heat can get overbearing at some points in the day. As it is opened 24/7, I would advice it as a midnight-hobby to pass time for the insomniacs.
Prawning as a hobby has grown past its glory days where people would prawn throughout the night in hopes of catching the 'priced prawn'. This particular vicinity however, still catches the liking of many, old-timers and newbies alike due to its spacious area. The prices of the rods and baits though, may be quite a turn off for those looking for just a leisure time-passing hobby as it tends to be a little expensive. A few years ago, this place played host to my virgin prawning experience.
The two huge ponds are usually crowded with people. Reserving a particular 'best spot' for catching prawns may be a little difficult if travelling alone as one usually has to set up the station by finding chairs from the random few lying around the compound. What is a plus, is that the prawns are refilled regularly so that there is certainly no lack of prawns to be caught from the pond. However, pursuing such a hobby does require a lot of patience and technique. A new-comer then, I found myself constantly jealous of the buckets of prawns my neighbour would catch as compared to the measly few jumping in my net. As I visited the place more, I too did learn new tricks to catching the prawns like the way to tie the bait, and the 'best spots' of the pond.
My time there was always an enjoyable one as bulk of my time would be spent talking nonstop with the friends I went with or made at the prawning area. It is in my opinion, a quiet and personal place where one can have heart to heart talks and yet engage in a not so tiring activity. Whats best is that at the end of the day, I get to enjoy the succulent taste of the delicious freshly barbequed salt prawns!

The prawns have Shrunk
I've prawned thrice at hai bin prawning at the bishan outlet. Prawning is fun because of the thrill when you feel something tugging at your line and the excitement of pulling up your catch. The last thing you want to do is to try to get your money's worth because you got to be either an expert prawn catcher or have super beginner's luck or beg the prawning uncle for frozen prawns in their fridge to catch enough prawns to cover the cost of the rods.
I prawned a couple of weeks back and the prawns seems to have shrunk! The 4 of us caught about 20 over prawns within the span of 3 hours. 1 hour cost $15 and 3 hours cost $33 per rod. I heard only the branch at bishan has this promotion rate. Out of the 20 odd prawns probably only 3 or 4 were big prawns. As compared to last year, most of the prawns we caught were huge! I think they were trying to cut cost of the prawns couldn't breed fast enough to grow bigger.
What I love about the prawns caught from prawning is the orange goodness of roe at their spine! But these prawns were so small there was no orange goodness in it. Despite this, I would still go back to bishan to prawn because they have one of the best rates in singapore and there aren't many choices to begin with. I really do hope their they import back the mama prawns and not the baby ones!
Had a really good time!
I've only tried prawning here once, and it was one of the best experiences in my LIFE.
At first I didn't know what to expect, but my cousin and her friend, whom are more experienced, showed me how to hold the rod and how to cut the worms (which I didn't want to do because ew, worms) and hook them up as bait. We spent nearly the whole day there, and even though we didn't catch as much prawns as we'd like, it felt really satisfying.
The defining moment of the day was when we were about to leave the place, the uncle in charge of the place started talking to us. It was closing time, and there was no else around. Just when we're about to leave, he gave us a bagful of prawns. No kidding. I was surprised, and very touched. He was all, "oh just take them! If we keep them for too long they wouldn't be fresh anymore so take them!" We definitely left the place with happy, happy smiles on our face.
Exciting for beginners, though it comes with a pinch on your wallet
Hai Bin prawning is located 4 bus stops away from bishan MRT and is one of the more famous prawning places in SIngapore. Being novices, my friends and I decided to follow the crowd and try our hand at it.
The first thing that greets you when you go to the counter to rent your rods would be the price: 1 hour 15 dollars and 3 hours for 30 dollars. For a student like me, woah, that was a tad too expensive for my liking. The grey hair man, whom i presume as the owner of the shop is really friendly and offer to teach you the basics of prawning. After the quick crash course, we proceeded to put our limited skills to the test.
Depending on the time and day you go and whether the pond has just been refilled with prawns, sometimes a catch can come really fast while at other times, the wait for the prawn to bite your bait gets really boring. When I finally managed to get my first prawn, imagine the sense of satisfaction I had with myself for someone indulging in this sport for the first time only.
I managed to make a decent catch of 7 prawns at the end of the hour, beginner's luck I guess. You can barbecue the fruits of your labour on the spot with the friendly shop assistants ever the willing to help you set up the fire. The prawns are really succulent grilled, and the natural flavour of the prawn is able to permeate your mouth on the first bite.
Definitely worth the experience for a day of fun with your friends.
great for gatherings
Ever tried prawning? Or eating the fruits of your labor? Try this place next time then and I promise you will be squealing with surprise when you catch a prawn. That applies to ladies, not gentlemen though!
I lost my virginity to Hai Bin. As in, virgin prawning experience! I had never thought I would be able to catch a prawn since I am so clumsy. But I did manage to catch some that night. I love the vibrancy of the place because there were so many people. Maybe it was a weekend but from what I have heard, this place is very popular.
Prawning is such an expensive activity! I thought to myself that if I spent so much money on this activity and not catch a single claw, I am going to die of embarrassment and heart pain. Fortunately, I emerged safe and sound with a few prawns to feast on. Hence, I can only say it was a fun experience though tad boring because prawns take quite awhile to notice food. Ha!
Possible place for dating!
Located at Bishan, there was definitely no problems finding this place & it is also easily accessible for those who do not have their own transport vehicle.
The price for rod rental is quite competitive considering their location. Also, there seem to be more prawns here for catch! Prawning can be a possible dating activity because while waiting for the prawn to bite the bait, you have a lot of time to talk to your date and get to know each other better.
It is such a thrill to be able to grill your own catch at the end of your pawning session. However it is not for the faint hearted as some might find it cruel to pierce a stick through the live prawn before grilling it alive.
Bad service was provided while I was there. The person on duty did not inform us how much time was left and charged us when we over shot our intended time frame. Also the person was rude and have difficulty speaking in English. Other than the bad service staffs, it was a fun experience prawning! For those who are not affected much by bad service, this is a must-go place!
Went to Hai Bin prawning once and never went back again. I drove in that day with my family for a day of bonding. I noticed that it’s not near the Bishan MRT station, which means bus transfers:( The rates were $30 for 3 hours for a rod. I thought it was pretty expensive and it proved to be so when I only caught one prawn after 3 hours:( The only plus point was that you get to grill your catch immediately after you caught them with the BBQ pit there. Only recommended if you’re up for a relaxing activity as the hours of waiting for the prawns to take the bait is really quite a bore.
Prawn fishing has always been a fun activity to me, but only when I can really spare the extra cash.
Costing $30+ for a rod for 3 hours, I think it is really costly. However, placing the cost aside, it really is a fun activity to try out when you are either hanging out with your friends, or having some bonding time with your family.
I usually go to Hai Bin Prawning with a particular group of friends. Usually, the six or seven of us will rent three rods in total, for three hours. Usually the guys in the group will be doing some friendly competitive fishing, while we girls will just sit back and watch them. Once, we all caught a total of 38 prawns (and a lobster which my boy took home as a pet). It was a real achievement.
The place is located at an extremely convenient location for me as I live nearby. The layout of the area is really neat too. Sometimes though, they play their music too loud. And it is not so much my type of music, so it gets quite annoying.
Other than that, it is a nice place to chill during after hours when almost everywhere else is closed.
Interesting night out
As the name suggests, this is a place for prawning, to catch prawns and barbeque later. As the place is open for 24hrs, it is ideal for people who like to stay out till late and need a new idea for what to do. The place is sheltered so there is no worries if it is raining or not. The prawning equipment are provided and you pay per hour or a package of three hours at a go.
Using the bait given, you have to attach it to the hook and throw it into the pond and wait for the prawns to come. I guess it is something like fishing but easier. After catching your prawns, you can place them in a provided net which you should leave in the pond so that the prawns can stay alive till you decide to barbeque them.
There is also a hawker centre behind the catching area for those who get hungry while waiting for the prawns. Vending machines are also available to get drinks. Overall, this is a new and interesting experience which I believe everyone should try at least once. Don’t worry if you are afraid of touching the prawns, go with male friends! :)
One of the better prawning places
I would say that this prawning place is one of the better ones in Singapore, as compared to Farm Mart, Punggol and East Coast Park. In this prawning place, there is two big ponds. Try to prawn at the pond which is the one further away from the counter, because it is easier to catch the prawns at that pond. I am not too sure either. However, on nights of weekday and weekends, it is very packed and being able to get a good spot with ample space for you and your friends are hard. However, sometimes you might never know if you are able to catch lots or prawns or very little. Sometimes, when my luck is good, I am able to catch around twenty per hour. But it all depends to your technique and luck. By default, you provide free chicken hearts which you can use as baits for the prawns. However, if you would like to lure the prawns faster and make it easier to get onto your hook, I would suggest getting earthworms as bait (but you have to pay for it, of cos). Also, sometimes there will be uncles whom are also customers who will give you prawns if they see that you did not catch any prawns.
Fun-filled activity for the night!
Prawning is a relatively new hobby in Singapore, just making its mark a few years ago. Basically, you pay money to rent the rod and some fish bait, and you are good to go. After a number of hours, you can even BBQ your catch and eat them fresh, straight at the prawning place!
Prawning can be a really fun activity, but some patience would be required, as with fishing. Without patience, it would be difficult to catch some prawns. I'd recommend going with some friends or family as chatting as you prawn will make the wait more bearable. Also, I'm sure many of you would not dare to unhook the prawn from the rod, so it'd be advisable to go with someone who is brave and not afraid of doing the chore!
There are some technique to prawning, and once you get the hang of it, you can easily catch 30 - 50 prawns with a few rods in just a few hours! I especially love the joy of catching a prawn, from the first to the last prawn I catch for the night, I'll still be excited each time I feel some tug at the rod!
Also, for those who do not enjoy the salty barbequed prawns, the friendly staff at the place would gladly cook up some prawn dishes for you at a small fee! You can also purchase drinks and light snacks like ice-creams and chips if you get hungry while prawning.
Prawning is not a cheap activity, but the more hours you purchase, the cheaper it will be. Although sometimes I feel a little cruel prawning, the fun is really tempting and it's hard to resist an invite to go prawning!
