Snails for dinner?

I have been to Hajjah Maimunah a few times so far and I definitely think it is a nice place to be surrounded with friends and family, and enjoy good, authentic, traditional Malay food. I heard that Hajjah Maimunah has a couple of branches around Singapore but the branch that I usually go to is at Geylang which is right beside the Tanjong Katong Complex, if I’m not mistaken.

They have ‘tons’ of variety of dishes to choose from –ranging from meats like chicken, mutton and lamb to seafood like prawns, fish, squid and even SNAILS. You must try the Lemak Siput ! It is basically snails cooked in coconut milk. Sound exotic huh? If you are ever inspired to be Andrew Zimmanes in Bizarre Foods on Discovery, Travel and Living, I think here’s your chance. The texture is indescribable. Just that, served with a plate of piping hot, plain, white rice and there you go, simply heavenly!

Some crazy rendang here people

If rendang is what you need, come down to Hajah Maimunah! This place serves authentic malay food that I feel, is simply out of this world. Although the food might be a little on the high side and troublesome to order, I think it is worth it.

This place is a usual for me, just like Mas Ayu. But the one thing this place has above Mas Ayu, is the fact that this place is air conditioned. It is not all the time you get to eat malay food in an air conditioned placed though. From the Ayam lemak to the Beef rendang, this place really knocks my socks off and I am very impressed.

Awesome rendang.

If there's one thing I love about Hajjah Maimunah, it's their rendang. I love rendang, so my standards are pretty high, but theirs pleased me and makes me want to come back for more so I guess it's a winner!

I've only been here a few times though, always with family. It's almost always crowded (especially during weekend nights), and it's self-service, in which the server (usually very friendly with warm smiles on their face) would attend to you. Their variety of food is amazing though, I mean, even me as a Malay could not name some of them! Their price range is also very affordable, considering it's a restaurant.

Basically, I have nothing to complain about. Do try to dine here at least once!

Amazing authentic malay food

The mention of Hajah Maimunah Restaurant is enough to give me the excitement because it is the place i frequent almost every month with my family and friends. With its wide array of malay dishes and sweet and savoury deserts, it will definitely get you hooked.

A personal favourite of my family and I is the dish called siput sedut. It is so addictive that one bowl of it will never be enough if you are sharing it with a large group. Some of their signature dishes such as the lemak ayam and the ikan bakar are a must try if you are ever going to head there. Do also wear comfortable shoes cos the queue can lead you all the way to the corridors of the restaurant and it can be quite a long wait indeed. But trust me all the waiting is definitely going to be worth it. Enjoy them with a plate of rice and perhaps a cup of hot drink and you are good to enjoy the rest of your day. Enjoy.

A place for family dinners

This restaurant is filled with authentic Malay foods. It is impossible to choose only one dish and there is always a long queue. It is nice to go there with all your relatives and you can even make a reservation, just in case you are bringing a whole bunch of people.

The food there is amazing. It is how grandma used to make. It is really authentic and delicious. It is a two story building, which means a lot of seat upstairs and jam-packed downstairs.

The downside of this restaurant is queue to get the dishes. It is really long and it stretches till outside the entrance. But hey, to get good food, you need to pay the price!

Be in touch with the Malay in you...

For a traditional and authentic Malay experience in food, Hajjah Maimunah easily comes tops in the rankings. With its food selection that is mostly of kampung dishes, the variety also includes traditional kueh which are unique for the Malay culture.

Among all the dishes available, one prominent dish that cannot be missed out is the Sambal Goreng. With all its various forms-some include beef lungs and beef liver, the necessary ingredients are beef, fried tofu and green beans. The Sambal Goreng here is not too spicy, neither is it too dry. In other words, it is perfectly seasoned, good enough to be eaten just with plain rice. Not only that, the Ayam Bakar (grilled chicken) and Asam Pedas (spicy asam fish) are dishes to die for!

However, the outlets are not that easily accessible, say for instance the outlet at Jalan Pisang, its located at the Kampung Glam conservation area, so you would have to alight at Bugis MRT station and walk down further Arab Street to reach your destination. A typical walk would take an average of 15minutes. Of course, a good point to derive is that it simply stimulates your hunger further as you are on your way!

The restaurant does have a homely ambience, which is perfect for family gatherings and dinners. Since it is quite crowded during weekends at dinner hours, it’s advisable to go there slightly earlier to get your seats secured. So do enjoy the Malay experience as soon as possible!

crave-worthy

Awesomely wide range of food to choose from, although focuses on traditional malay dishes. it is constantly filled with customers and should be so given the great tasting food they serve. it is the sort of restaurant where one can get a home cooked meal, although it is in fact a restaurant. Their nasi padang allows you to choose what you love best and it is good whether you dine in or have it taken away. Its siput sedut [a type of shell fish, seafood dish] is really addictive and its gravy goes very well with plain rice or any sort of main dish you order. It is not too spicy hence caters to non spicy eaters as well and makes it easier for foreigners to have it a go. And although it may seem too rich [cooked in coconut milk] and fattening, it is worth every slurp.

Another lighter dish as compared to nasi padang that i'd recommend would also be the mee rebus which really is a delight to have. Customers of all ages can enjoy eating there and since it is situated somewhere in Geylang, it is little wonder why it is rather popular with the masses, especially after a day out at the nearby market. Despite its kampung style concept, it is rather clean and very efficient. There is a lift accessible and my grandma didn't even have to get up from her wheelchair just to get to the second floor.

Authentic Malay Food!

This is one of the place that you can get local and authentic Malay food in the central of Singapore. It is actually located near Arab Street, just a few roads down but a little inside.

They serves many dishes from Nasi Padang to Mee Rebus and even Kueh. Their Nasi Padang is what most people craves for as there is a wide selection of dishes to choose from. If you come in a group, you can eat on your own plate or pick out many dishes and share together. The price for one dish varies, depending on what type of dish you choose. If you are a seafood lover, it will be slightly expensive than beef or chicken. They do have vegetables and other dishes too.

Well particularly for my review, this restaurant serves a very nice Tahu Goreng (Fried Tofu). I wasn't a big fan of Tahu Goreng but when i first tasted this from them, it's too addictive that i could finish up a big piece of Tahu Goreng just to myself. It's not really a normal size of tofu but it is bigger. What is addictive is the eggs being smeared on top of the tofu and this particular sauce they are using. The sauce is actually a sweet black sauce but it's different from other sweet sauce because it doesn't taste too sweet. As you know tofu is soft and has a very smooth texture, the sweet sauce will absorb into it and it will leave your taste bud craving for more.

It is like eating an ice cream that melts in your mouth. Worth trying it!
