Getting better

Tried ramen play many years back and was pretty turned off by their ramen. It tasted like instant noodles broth and their meat was tough and dry back then. Recently, my friends decided to lunch there and I was slightly apprehensive.

We visited the bishan outlet on a weekday afternoon and there was a student value meal which came with drinks. I had their cha shu ramen and to my surprise it tasted much better than the first time I tried it. However, despite being called ramen play and their specialty should be their ramens, I went back on a separate occasion and tried their rice bowls which were delicious too.

Overall, I feel that ramen play May not serve the best ramen but it is generally ok for the price they charge. It is specially so when they have lunch time promotions.

mediocre

I was at the Holland V branch for dinner one day last week and it was around peak hour but the restaurant was still relatively empty as compared to the other restaurants in Holland V. Service was slow and the waiters were not very polite or friendly... not a good thing to experience. I used to like RamenPlay (I gave it a positive review before last year) but I felt that the standard has really dropped and its taste is unlike before.

The ramen now is rather forgettable and it didn't make me want to come back for more. The noodles tasted like mainstream Jap noodles that you can get from the Jap section at Cold Storage. It was overcooked and had a weird floury taste to it. It used to be chewy and had a nice texture to it. The broth, which is the most important thing in a ramen bowl was so salty. It tasted like they just added loads of salt to make up for the time that the broth didn't get to simmer over. It just tasted like SALT. Nothing complex or rich... The fried tonkotsu was hard and wasn't hot inside. It meant that they pre-fried it before and just re-fry it again to heat the meat up before serving. Prices are comparable to Ippudo and Keisuke Tonkotsu King but the standard is nowhere near!!! If you are craving for a good bowl of Ramen, please do not come here. There are many other ramen places that offer wayyyy better ramen for the same price or lesser.

Playing with Ramen

I don't know if its just me or is the ramen here really bouncy as if they've been played with in the kitchen. Despite the catchy name of the shop - obviously promoting its Ramen - I find that the taste of the noodles can hardly compare to the hype surrounding this shop.

Sure, the restaurant always seems to be brightly lit in a pristine condition. However, upon tasting the noodles I felt that the texture of the noodles were not to my liking. For the price of the noodles, I wouldn't visit the shop again.

Not all was disappointing. At least the staff were friendly and even bothered to make small talk with me while I ordered.

fun

Maybe I am gullible, but when I saw the name "RamenPlay" I really thought I would have the chance of playing with; or creating my ramen combination. Boy, was I so wrong ( and a little disappointed). Nevertheless, I got to 'play' with some sides; of which consisted of chilli powder, chives and grounded garlic. It did help me to wile away the time whilst waiting for my food to come; it was some fun mixing all the little sides and the chives are REALLY GOOD. I don't think they serve it freely anymore, so be sure to request for the chives! There are no limits on how many plates you can ask for.

I recommend trying the double soup ramen soup dishes; they are really think and tasty. Ramenplay's ramen is also quite chewy! One thing I have to note that the drink sizes look DECEIVINGLY huge on the menu; it actually is really PUNY; about half or one-third the size in the menu. I suggest just getting the refillable green tea, rather than spending 5 bucks on a puny cup of drink.

too salty!

I visited Ramenplay just once before with some friends, and I can safely say I probably won't be going back there again. I'm not a huge fan of ramen, but decided to give it a try as it was pretty affordable, and I'd heard some good comments about Ramenplay. However, the service was spotty - perhaps the waitress who served us was new, as she seemed very inexperienced and unsure.

When the ramen arrived, I was shocked by how salty the broth was. It seemed like whatever flavour it had was masked by all the salt! Quite a pity actually, as the noodles were of a nice, springy texture.

Really wouldn't recommend this for those who aren't fond of very strong flavours, like me.

Good ramen x condiment palette

Good char siew ramen, though certainly not the best. Nonetheless, still a great place to satisfy your ramen cravings.

What I love best about this place is ironically, their condiment palette, consisting of fried diced garlic, chili paste and.. spicy chives! You might think that those condiments are only appetizers or just the average add-ons. You're wrong.

The fried garlic adds a punch to your ramen when you add bits of it in EVERY spoonful of ramen. So much more flavor, so much more crunch. The chives helps to balance out the meaty tastes and gives every mouthful more texture! Their chili paste works too but is a little too spicy for my handling. HAHA!

Remember, if you're seated at a table with your bowl of ramen before you and have yet to see the shadow of the condiment palette. ASK FOR ITTTTTT! :D

Falls Really Short

I was really excited to try out this new franchise in Singapore and being relatively in love with ramen, I was inexorably enticed by the wonders of this novelty.

I definitely commend the service at the Jem outlet I patronised. The staff felt really sincere and amicable, and was extremely helpful especially since my baby brother was with me on that day and needed tons of assistance.

The ramen however, lived not up to standard. :( I ordered the Vegetable Double Soup Ramen. The noodles had a certain tanginess to it, which I don't enjoy personally. And the soup didn't mix well with my taste buds either. It felt a little too bland and tasteless, and had a bit of a bitter and tangy under-taste. My company ordered the Sze Chuan Ramen and Cha Su Ramen (classic), and both weren't pleasing either. The former was neither spicy nor sour, and had the quintessential bitter and tangy under/after-taste. Whilst the latter had a broth that was just too bland for our platters.

I suppose they are healthier, guessing that they probably don't use much MSG. But it reminds me too much of a bad example of healthy food. It was really a rather disappointing experience and I wouldn't go back there.

Love their soup base!

RamenPlay is my most visited ramen shop in town for their Sanpou Ramen (Tonkotsu), Toroniku Double Soup Ramen and Butariki Ishinabe (pork stone pot rice).

Their soup base is the best that I have tried, it is rich and flavourful, which is done by gently simmering the choice cuts of specially-imported soft pork bones, pork sinew, and a secret recipe of spices for more than 12 hours. (Note: the soup base might be too rich for the milder taste buds.) Their noodles is special in a sense that at first try it taste like maggie noodles, a little chewy, and not at all like the ramen noodles that we eat. At first try, I must admit I felt cheated, it feels like they just take the maggie noodles to substitute the traditional ramen noodles.

However, I'm not sure if I'm used to the noodles or something, the slightly chewy texture of the noodles goes in quite a perfection with the rich soup base.
Their char siew and pork cheeks are soft and delicious, not to mention their half boiled egg.

The Butariki Ishinabe (pork stone pot rice) is really nice, the pan fried and barbequed pork taste and smells really good, I'm not even kidding. Coupled with spring onions, seaweed, special sauce drizzled down the sides of the stone bowl and a raw egg that you can 'cook and mix' in the stone bowl, there's no reason why you should resist this!

The serving is quite filling and the price is just below $20. When it's nearing dinner time, you might have to queue for seats and thus go earlier if you can!
