Best Butter Crab In Singapore

Mellben seafood is the king of all seafood restaurants in Singapore (and my heart). They offer a wide variety of crab dishes - butter crab, black pepper crab, chili crab, claypot beehoon crab. Name it and they’ll have it! The butter crab is my favourite by far. The creamy gravy is an impeccable combination of sweetness and mild spiciness, and I always use man tou to soak up all of that liquid gold. Not one drop of that buttery sauce will be left when I’m around!

They’re known for their crabs, but their cze char dishes are equally worth trying. Their kung pao chicken is especially delicious. Imagine perfectly fried chicken slices drizzled in a sweet and sour sauce that tastes similar to Thai sweet chili. The cereal prawn is a winner too. Fresh and succulent prawns lie in a bed of crispy, salty cereal, just asking to be devoured.

Mellben is also known for their long waiting times, so be sure to come on a weekday unless you have time to spare! I went on a Saturday night and had to wait close to 1.5 hours before being seated, and then close to another 1 hour for our food to be served. You’ll be able to save a lot of time on weekdays since they accept reservations from Monday to Friday but not on weekends.

Be prepared to wait!

My family used to come here whenever we were celebrating any special occasions. But after they raised their prices, it became a rare affair. Recently we went back, and to our horror, we had to queue for more than 2 hours on a Friday night before we were served. We started waiting at about 5:45pm and only a table at about 8pm. It took another 45 minutes before we were served the crabs.

Our crabs were surprisingly large even after they told us they didn't have any more medium to large sized crabs left. The claypot beehoon crabs were worth the hype. The milky broth was so rich and flavourful that I went back for second and third helpings. I suggest that you order extra soup. The butter crabs were as good as I remembered. The sauce was creamy with hints of sweetness. Remember to order the mantous / deep fried buns to dip the sauce with. I've read a lot of complaints that their crabs were all very lean, but ours were quite meaty, so I do not have issues with that. Our cze char dishes were decent, nothing to shout about. The prawns we ordered were really fresh and succulent though.

I heard they take in reservations on weekdays so be sure to do that if you're heading down.
