Not that great
I was glancing through other reviews before I wrote mine, and I'm starting to wonder if we have the same place in mind. Why does everyone find the chicken rice here so fantastic? I live nearby and eat it on occasion, but it has always tasted mediocre to me. I'm no chicken rice connoisseur either, so it can't be that I'm not enjoying it because I'm really particular.
Much prefer Pow Sing at Serangoon Gardens.
Best chicken rice in the North
When it comes to chicken rice in Singapore, everyone has their own personal favorite chicken rice stall. To me, what makes a good chicken rice would be their rice and how soft their chickens are.
Yishun's Hainanese Chicken Rice is hard to miss thanks to their huge signboards and long queues during peak hours. However, I never waited for more than 15 minutes for a table as they serve very quickly.
I specially love their roasted chickens. The skin is crispy and the chicken meat tender. The sauce that comes with it isn't too salty nor diluted. Their chicken rice is to die for. Every grain is plump and extremely fragrant. It isn't too oily as well.
They do take aways as well but I personally feel that the take away chicken rice is less tasty as the rice tend to get soaked up in the chicken sauce, causing it to be too soggy. With a friendly price tag, efficient servers and yummy chicken rice, I'm definitely recommending this place!
Famous in the North
A corner stall located at Block 925 in a coffee shop in Yishun, this stall should not be foreign to the north-dwellers. Although Block 925 do humbly boasts of other delectable food like the prawn noodle, each time I choose to eat at 925, I cannot resist ordering the chicken rice!
There is, most often than not, always a queue for the chicken rice, but I never had to line up for more than 10 minutes to order since they are always efficient. Once they have taken your order, you just have to keep the receipt and they will serve the food to you within 5 minutes.
They only have white chicken rice (my favourite!) I usually order the bigger serving because it is really that good - the cheaper option is definitely not enough to satisfy. Even my best friend who eats really little can finish the big plate! One of the best thing of 925 chicken rice is that the chicken is served in a different plate from the rice, garnished with pickles and cucumbers and drizzled with a generous amount of sauce. I like them separated so the rice doesn't get soggy from the sauce. The chicken, of course are always tender and delicious, I always feel that a plateful is not enough!
925 chicken rice is always the one thing I never fail to suggest when my non-north-dweller friends ask for recommendations for good food in the north. If you haven't tried it yet, you are really missing out. I personally feel that it is equivalent in standard to Boon Tong Kee, and it is so much more friendly on the pocket!
The best chicken rice in town.
I'm sure this place, affectionately known as 925 Chicken Rice to many, would not be unfamiliar to the Northerners. In my opinion, even after tasting Tian Tian Chicken Rice and such, I find myself returning to Yishun Blk 925 for the ever so familiar chicken rice time and time again.
This stall may be one of the most prominent stalls in that hawker centre. The huge signboard and the queues would make it very hard to miss. They only serve white chicken rice but that would suffice for me - the tender chicken meat, thinly sliced cucumbers and their chilli go so well together. Some chicken rice stalls have very tough and hard to chew chicken meat but definitely not those here. In fact, I think they can be swallowed without chewing if you wanted to because the meat is that tender. Topped with fragrant rice and a bowl of soup that tastes like home, I don't think there's any qualms about having a plate of piping hot chicken rice here.
Not only is their chicken rice absolutely tasty, their service is very prompt as well. Food is usually served around 5 minutes after your order is taken. For chicken rice lovers, you have to try this! It is absolutely worth the queue, which is usually not very long and will be cleared very fast.
Quintessentially Chicken Rice
I stumbled upon this little Chicken Rice placed tucked away in some corner of Yishun whilst traversing the great Singaporean plains in search for dinner. Unsurprisingly, in an unfamiliar environment (honestly, apart from northerners, who goes to the north?), I chose to go with a familiar dish. Perhaps it was because my expectations were low. Perhaps it was because I was really quite dreadfully hungry. Perhaps it was because the Chicken died happy, or something- who knows? But it was a solid, unassuming, unpretentious, filling plate of chicken rice that does its job. Sure- it isn't an Emerald Palace Hotel $20 plate of Chicken Rice- and thank God, because it's a fact that gratification can be inversely proportionate to cost.
unique chicken rice, recommended to dine-in
I've eaten from this chicken rice stall since young, and I would say that the taste of their chicken rice beats most of the other chicken rice I've eaten before. I love how the stall serves boneless chicken rice for the convenience of lazy eaters such as myself. It is actually quite amazing how the staff can remove the chicken bones so skillfully without compromising on the overall appearance of the plate of chicken.
However, one great setback is that the takeaway chicken rice doesn't taste as fantastic as if you dine in at the hawker centre as the steamed chicken, the sauce, and the rice will all be packed together. The sauce tends to make the rice too salty, coupled with the fact that the rice itself is already slightly oily, I guess this wouldn't be the healthiest option for health savvy individuals.
My chicken rice stall in Yishun
Many years ago when I still went to Yishun GV for movies, I would always come to this stall for their chicken rice. I am a Hainanese myself and my father can cook very good chicken rice and this is one of the few stalls that can cook Hainanese chicken rice like my father.
The secret of cooking good chicken rice was controlling the amount of ingredients added to cooking the rice. Some stalls cooked the rice too oily, some stalls cooked the rice too plain with not enough fragrance. This stall seemed to have perfected their control and every time that I visited, their chicken rice tasted the same, not too oily and always fragrant enough.
The other important part of chicken rice was the chicken. To cook the chicken to the correct tenderness required a lot of skills and even my father was not always able to control the correct tenderness. But this stall must have a lot more practice than my father because they must have cooked at least 50 chickens a day so they were able to achieve the right tenderness for the chicken meat.
One of the best places for chicken rice in the north
There are quite a number of excellent Hainanese chicken rice stalls in Singapore - not that many in the north though! Fortunately there is 925 Yishun Hainanese chicken rice. I almost always have this whenever I pass by.
The chicken is really firm and fresh here, especially the breast meat - not like some other places where you get this flaky, powdery taste. The rice might be a just a tad oily for some folks, but it goes really great with the chicken soup, or you could order a dumpling soup from a nearby stall to go with as well.
They also add a bit of 'achar' (pickled cucumbers, chilli, carrots), something that I've not seen in most other stalls. It adds a bit of uniqueness to the combination.
Decent, I guess.
925 Chicken Rice has certainly earned a name for itself, but I don't think it's much different from any other chicken rice stall. The quality and portions are not consistent. Sometimes, as other reviewers have noted, they serve tender enough breast meat that isn't a chore to eat. But other times, and most of the time, I would say, the breast meat is tough and dry and also...somewhat meagre, as though the chicken was anorexic when it was alive. Of course, if you don't want to take any chances with their breast meat, ask for the drumstick.
I do love the flavourful rice though, which tastes even better with their chilli. But, on the whole, while they serve pretty decent chicken rice, it isn't good enough to keep me coming back and wanting more. Don't expect to wow your palate at this place.
Delicious chicken rice
As a big lover of chicken rice - one of my favourite local delicacies - I must say that 925 Yishun Hainanese Chicken Rice did not disappoint. Affordable and sumptuous, my plate of chicken rice was truly a happy meal.
Breast meat is usually tough, but the breast meat that I ordered was tender and juicy. The rice was also soft and tasty, and to me the rice is the most important part of the dish. Chicken rice has a unique, slight ginger taste to it and the chicken rice I ordered was just perfect.
Even though Yishun is far from where I live, I will definitely be back again to eat from 925 Yishun Hainanese Chicken Rice.
