Without sacrificing coziness and budget of the traditional backpackers’ inn, Wink innovates beyond conventional hostels in design, quality and conveniences. Wink is geared for the young (at heart), trendy and technology savvy travellers. Amongst the very first worldwide to tout “pod” style beds, Wink’s own designer twist to the concept indulges travellers their private sleeping sanctums, while allowing for socializing in individual rooms.

Each custom-made pod is uniquely put together with unmatched features:

  • Custom-designed and spacious
  • Sound resistant walls in-between pods
  • Dedicated ambient backlight that turns on automatically to guide you to your assigned pods, without disturbing others
  • Adjustable reading LED light for your glare-free reading pleasure
  • 6” anti-dust mites, orthopaedic mattresses
  • Power socket to charge your gadgets and accessories
  • Side-ledge and hook for your personal effects
  • Superior 260 thread-count soft linen and sumptuous duvets
  • Lockers with smartcard access and generous space, and right at the pod itself

Queen-sized pods are available for couples travelling together, or the traveller who yearns a bigger bed. Ladies dormitories, complete with vanity counters, provide female guests better peace of mind and a little luxury on the side. All rooms are air-conditioned, tastefully decorated and most have their own snug sofa corners

Flashpacking Haven

“Flashpacking” is a new term that has popped up used to describe “higher-end” backpackers. Flashpackers are basically travellers who follow the backpacker ideal but they typically are older and hence have more experience and a bigger budget, usually carrying around more gear like laptops, and high end cameras to get the most out of their experience. Wink Hostel is among the first of these new breed of hotels that cater to flashpackers, and is basically a “high-end designer” hostel. Since then it has induced several other flashpacking hostels to pop up in Singapore!

The design concept is clean and minimalist with emphasis placed on having big communal areas so guests can interact easily with one another. In the place of bunk beds are stylish “pods” each with their own reading lights, adapters, lockers. The “pods” are far more spacious than normal hostel beds and are separated from each other by sound resistant walls. Rooms and lockers are accessed with key cards which only open the specific locker and room you are assigned to.

Another subtle feature we found great was how your specific pod light turns on for 2 minutes automatically whenever you go into your room. This is so you don’t have to turn on the light, giving you sufficient time to find your bed and not disturb anyone.

My tip would be to pick a pod away from the main door so you don’t get woken up. Also get a lower bunk bed so you don’t have to haul your luggage on top so you won’t disturb others if you come back late at night.

In summary, Wink Hostel provides a heightened backpacking experience with more space, facilities, and other subtle attention details that somewhat justify the 50% higher price over traditional hostels. I found the place impressive and it definitely filled up the flashpacking niche and it aimed to.

Impressive hostel

Stayed a night in Wink Hostel (Queen bed, shared room) and I was impressed the moment I stepped into the hostel. It was very clean and the kitchen and shared toilets were extremely clean and the whole place felt homey instantly.

Let's start with the location. It is right smack in the middle of Chinatown and convenient to everywhere else. It is in the centre of Mosque street and ladies who walk alone along this street might get stared at by uncles lingering around nearby pubs.

The room was minimalistic yet funky. The room was dimly lit with purple lights from below each o the beds and the beds were compartmentalized. Once I climbed onto bed (top bunk), I did not really want to get up anymore because the bed was extremely comfortable.

Had a really pleasant stay here and might choose to have a staycation here as compared to some hotels.
