Although Singapore is one of the most expensive cities in the world, along with transport, I also find trips to the cinema to be an activity which is actually cheaper than in the UK. Tickets are about half the price, and the food is always cheaper, with Shaw Lido being my cinema of choice for most of my movie outings.
The location is perfect, I can go straight from shopping in Ion and hop on an MRT when I’m done, so for someone as lazy as me it’s perfect. Also, the inside is gorgeous for just a cinema, with a sunken seating and a large screen showing the latest trailers all overlooking Orchard Road, there’s no way that the design has not been well thought out. However, there are some major flaws with the design of the ticketing and food areas. When there’s only one person on the till and a large line, it doesn’t take Einstein to work out that just one extra person on the tills will half waiting time, but on every trip I have always had to wait in a queue for at least 10 minutes just to buy a ticket. And don’t even get me started on the food system. You line up, pay, get given a ticket with a number on, only to then queue again as they make it. The result? Orders being lost, a long time waiting, and the most ineffective ordering system in Orchard.
Aside from the waiting times, I do love Shaw. The cinemas are large and clean, the seats are super comfy and the popcorn sizes are huge, just the way I like them. Typical cold cinema theatre, but still my favourite spot to come and catch a film.
I'm so glad to see that Shaw Theatres is getting an 89% rating average, the highest compared to the other local theatres, because Shaw's my favourite! It wasn't only until last year, when I found out about Shaw Lido and I just completely fell in love. The waiting area overlooking town with a huge screen playing movie trailers was truly a gem to discover.
Despite the fact that I've probably watched movies at Cathay three times more than I have at Shaw, mostly because Cathay's everywhere, there's just an extra spark of excitement in me whenever I watch at Shaw Lido. I haven't tried the other Shaw cinemas, but Shaw Lido is currently my favourite theatre in the whole country, and I can't wait to try out the other Shaw cinemas! Also, I love huge theatres so that's another reason why I love Shaw.
However when it comes to location and online booking convenience, Cathay still takes the cake. Maybe if Cathay had something like what Shaw Lido has...Maybe.
I have always found watching premiere movies a waste of money, even though I have never watched one until yesterday.
So, my first premiere movie experience was given to Shaw Theatres at Nex and I must say that if possible, I want to watch all movies at premiere theatres. But what’s so amazing about them?
Before the movie starts, you get to sit in a lounge that is exclusive for premiere movie goers. There, you can make your order that will be sent to the theatres when the movie starts. There’s a wide selection of items such as alcoholic beverages, cakes, popcorns and so on. Then, here comes the best part – the theatre. The leg room is insanely huge where you can totally just lie flat down. Forgot your jacket? They provide comfy blankets for you too! My personal favorite has got to be the “short wall” behind each seat. Now you will no longer get irritated when someone hits your seat on the back or if anyone uses their bright lit phone in front of you.
Finally, we got a free $5 complimentary F&B voucher each. Now, even the price is attractive.
I love movies, but somehow, Shaw isn't always the first option that comes into mind. When Shaw Cinemas was still operating in Toa Payoh, I knew that I always frequented the Movie Cinema based on whim and fancy.
Subsequently, when Shaw Cinemas closed down its Toa Payoh outlet, I have always relied on the next best alternative (and by next best I mean nearest) which is either Cathay or GV cinemas.
Even so, I do remember the times when I do choose shaw - they have amazing sound because they promote certain movies with digital surround sound which enhances the movie experience. On the downside however, the place is usually freezing cold despite a jacket. Also, depending on which outlet you go to, the seats may not be as comfortable.
When I want to watch a movie, Shaw will always be my first choice. In my opinion, they serve the nicest popcorn around - both salty and sweet flavours taste amazing - and provide excellent movie-going experiences. For instance, the surround sound system really increases the audio quality of the movies.
My favourite outlet would definitely be the one at Orchard, also known as Lido. The large, open space in between the ticketing office and the entrance to the cinema halls have plush sofas and a lovely view of Orchard, as well as some small eateries like canele. It's a great place to chill while waiting for the show to begin!
If I remember correctly, Shaw also offers the cheapest student price tickets amongst all the cineplexes in Singapore, at just $6.50. Worth every cent. (:
In my opinion, the best Shaw theatre is the one at Lido. They recently underwent a massive revamp and now looks modern, stylish and chic. Convenience is not an issue, since it is located within walking distance from Orchard MRT station.
Upon entering, the feel one gets is that of class. Lush red carpets line the floor and the overall experience is quite different from that of neighbourhood cinemas. One key difference that sets the Lido cineplex apart is that it boasts of a wide array of different foods and drinks. No more popcorn and coke and nachos, they now offer pizzas and coffees amongst other varieties too!
As for cinematic experience, the seats are comfortable and there is ample leg room. Popcorn is well-coated with caramel, although not as well as Cathay and picture and sound quality is good. Would like make a special mention that the last time I went, the picture was very clear and sharp and it made for an excellent movie experience.
Overall, definitely on my top few for movie places to go to. They also offer discounted student prices on certain days and timings, so do check it out if you want some savings! Convenient, affordable, quality.
With the recent signing of a contract between SHAW and SAFRA to extend movie privileges to Full Time National Servicemen (NSFs), there has been a large shift of army boys following the trail of discounted movie tickets from Golden Village to Shaw.
What I liked about the deal was that SHAW was more proactive in recognising what we do for Singapore. In addition to discounted movie tickets, there was a 1 for 1 weekend deal for 1,000 tickets daily (on weekends) and as such I got to enjoy 2 movies for the price of 1 whenever I book out.
Another point of praise for SHAW would be the accompanying discounts off popcorn and drinks that follow the purchase of movie tickets, a rarer sight when applied to other cinemas. Moreover, the experience is pleasant, I especially like the layout and design of cinemas at SHAW NEX. Moreover, seats are comfy but not too comfortable to make me fall asleep.
Kudos to SHAW for your support and excellent services! It has become my cinema of choice!
I usually try to stick to more commercial theatres like Cathay and Golden Village but as the years go, I find that the quality of the experience has been dropping. In the larger establishments, the queues are not well handled and you have to be prepared to be shoved around.
In Shaw however, the smaller theatres provide a cosier atmosphere that gets pretty intense depending on what genre of movie you are watching. However, there's still ample space and the chairs are very well cushioned.
While it may be daunting that the queues for the food and beverage seem quite long, the staff work very efficiently and you find that you didn't actually have to wait for very long! Do give Shaw a try. Furthermore, it has been recently renovated and now has an upgraded iMax theatre which are great for action movies.
The small theatres in Shaw are plush and well-furnished. I've been here several times because it's absolutely fantastic. Even if you get the seats up front, they're situated a slight distance away from the screen so you can get a decent view without having to crane your neck.
The theatres aren't big, which means they fill up quickly, but they're definitely more intimate than other commercial theatres like GV or Cathay. There’s enough leg room and the sound isn’t too loud that it hurts your ears. Shaw is definitely one of the most underrated movie theatres given the better treatment it strives to give every patron. Try watching a movie here once-you’ll definitely be back.
Everyone seems to be singing praises for Golden Village whilst none for Shaw. Muddled with curiosity, I purchased tickets to watch The Croods at Shaw.
Why isn't anyone complimenting Shaw? After my first hand experience there, I am still befuddled by the hype that revolves around Golden Village.
Firstly, the seats at Shaw looked like Osim massage chairs. They're humongous and arched specifically to prevent back or leg aches. Golden Village, on the other hand, owns seats that are a perfect recipe for both leg and back aches. I recalled aching all over after catching The Host, a 2 hour movie, at Golden Village. The seats at Shaw is so appropriately ginormous, I could even fold my legs on the chair.
Secondly, the leg space between the decks of chairs. I could place my legs horizontally in a 180 degree angle when it comes to Shaw. Unfortunately, my legs had a mere space sufficient for 90 degree angles at Golden Village.
Finally, the popcorns. Shaws popcorns seemed to be lacking some sort of a crucial ingredient. Golden Village thrives in the popcorn competition. The flavors and crispy quality made it severely addictive to snack upon. Oh, also, sound wise? Both sounded similar..
