Authentic Shanghainese Cuisine
Shanghai Renjia is a small restaurant nestled in a corner under Blk 151 along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 that serves authentic Shanghainese Cuisine. Although the service staff can be rather standoffish at times, the owners are extremely passionate about their food and this is evidently reflected in the quality of the dishes. The choices are not extensive, but be rest assured that whatever you choose, you will not leave unsatisfied.
The Xiao Long Bao served here rivals that of Crystal Jade and Din Tai Fung. Its skin is paper-thin, yet somehow manages to retain an astounding amount of soup. Ask for vinegar to accompany your Xiao Long Bao and risk getting scolded by Mr Zhang, who insists that their Xiao Long Bao is consumed without any condiments (not unlike how respectable French restaurants refuse to allow their customers to use Ketchup with their food). Such is the amount of pride Shanghai Renjia accords to their Xiao Long Bao. The Xiao Long Bao is far from being the only dish worth raving about at Shanghai Renjia - their rendition of spring rolls, handmade noodles and dumpling soup also takes the cake.
However, do take note that this is a small restaurant which only has five tables and everything is freshly prepared and made on the spot. I would not recommend dining here unless you have at least 1.5 hours to spare.
