Soooo prettyyyy

To put it really simply, UrbanWrite can be described as a “high-end Popular”. The stationery and gifts sold here are of top quality and hence, can be quite pricey.

I personally love to visit the outlet at Tampines 1 as I study nearby. It’s a really good place to kill time as the whole store is stocked with a lot of interesting and visually-appealing items. However, I usually leave the store empty-handed as I don’t always have the heart to spend, say, $5 on a fancy pen or a single sheet of shiny stickers. A lot of the things sold here are really pretty so I often find myself on the verge of an impulse buy.

On the other hand, you might want to shop here for gifts for your friends. Almost everything here is gift-worthy so you probably won’t have to browse too much before you find a suitable one.

Great for the Casual Artist

The great thing about Urban Write is that you can use your popular member card to get a 10% discount off your purchases! This means that you can buy arts and craft materials that are usually more expensive in other specialty shops such as PaperMarket or Art Friend at a cheaper price! Although the range is not as extensive as other art shops, I would say it is good enough to satisfy the casual artist.

The key attraction for me is the fact that they sell sculpy clay, which is difficult to buy in the far east of Singapore. Their items range from different types of clay to scrapbooking materials, as well as stationery and gifts.

A giant art & craft classroom

UrbanWrite is paradise for people who love art and craft. I am currently into scrapbooking, and stumbled upon UrbanWrite at Orchard Central. The store is huge. Unlike other stores with similar concepts, it is very spacious, which makes browsing among the dazzling display of paper products, scrapbooking tools and stationery easy. In fact, the layout of the store is so well decorated and planned, that it looks like a gigantic art and craft classroom. I love that they have displays from which customers and newbies to scrapbooking like myself can draw inspiration from. I can spend ages in the store mulling over ideas and just let my creative juices flow, and whenever I think of something I need, UrbanWrite would have it.

In addition to that, the items are cheaper as well. And that is before the discount that all Popular Card members are entitled to. Scrapbooking can be a rather expensive hobby as the materials and tools are costly, so I always look forward to the promotions at UrbanWrite because they offer great value. In fact, I just bought some scrapbooking paper products because they are currently having a 30% discount for a purchase of 10 papers and above.

I'm definitely heading back to get more materials!

Notebooks and colour pens

Since young, I had enjoyed buying notebooks, especially those with nice covers or unique designs. I seldom wrote anything in these notebooks because those note books were so nice that we could not bear to write anything on them.

Recently, I noticed my daughter also had such a habit. She liked to ask me to buy notebooks for her and when I last checked her study table, most of her note books only had the first few pages filled. It was not so much that she was wasteful but she just liked having nice note books.

Also, my daughter had a lot of colour pens. Her note book pages were always filled with so many colours that I had told her she was wasting a lot of time changing pens to write notes. Nevertheless, Urban Write was still the shop we liked to shop together. This was the place for her to re-stock her supplies.

UrbanWrite isn't all pencils and papers only!

I frequented UrbanWrite when I was an art student several months ago. It was a true stationery haven. Everything seemed alluring. Left, right, front and back. My eyes gleamed in amazement. Can I buy the entire store?

The stationeries sold there weren't the ordinary ones like those made available within the Popular bookstores. I recalled strutting in one day in search for jumping clays. Jumping clays is a rare type of clay which isn't sold in millions of stores here. My project required these rare items to mould my animation into reality. I searched it at Popular bookstores and Times to no avail. I sighed and resorted in my last eastern avenue; UrbanWrite.

I was greeted by a sea of notebooks peppered by Miffy. Miffy! The cartoon which I adored all along. How under rated. Hello Kitty always outshines Miffy for mysterious reasons unknown to mankind. I grabbed several Miffy notebooks and strutted further in. There it was. Jumping clays! It even came along with an assortment of colours. UrbanWrite is certainly the store which enables the eastern residents to save the fuels within themselves and their vehicles. There is no longer a need to travel towards that humongous yellow art shop at Bras Basah or Takashimaya.

Craft lovers' paradise

UrbanWrite is my favourite stationery store, as it is Popular’s answer to Paper Market. Targetted mainly at craft lovers like me, this classy stationery store carries a wide variety of decorative scrapbooking papers, as well as other handicraft paraphernalia. I love coming to UrbanWrite to get scrapbooking papers, as they’re great for making birthday cards for friends. The selection there is also updated frequently, so there are always new designs when I enter. From time to time, UrbanWrite also brings in craft kits, like polymer clay kits to make jewellery, so craft lovers, keep an eye out for that!

I love the fact that UrbanWrite carries random, affordable and cute things, like photo frames, which would make awesome gifts for friends. This store also has more high-end goods, such as fancy fountain pens and leather planners, so there’s definitely something for everyone.

The stationery at UrbanWrite is fancier than what’s available at Popular, so the prices are slightly higher. If you’re looking for, say, a cute notebook, do check out UrbanWrite! However, if you prefer function over form, Popular may be a better choice.

stationery world

UrbanWrite has great decoration, with the outlet at Tampines boasting a ring of fountain pens covered in felt decorated around their pillars, which both captivates the consumers' eye and brings about interaction with the material.

The store has a wide range of stationery, with many vividly coloured files and folders to various pens, notebooks and post-it pads. The outlet at Orchard Central even sells paper wallets and other miscellaneous items which can be gifts for friends or family. The scrapbook materials sold were of a great variety and staff are also well-versed in their knowledge of the products stocked. However, craft items aside, most of the goods sold were rather common and similar to other bookstores/craft shops such as Popular. It turned out however that it was a chain under Popular itself..

I would suggest dropping by here for their craft items, but for the basic necessities such as pens, Popular would be my go to place.

Exuberant

From the moment I stepped into UrbanWrite, specifically the outlet at Tampines One, it gave me an exuberant feel. The nuance of colours are well defined and not too 'overdone'.

There is a wide array of stationery, making it a paradise for teenagers. The files and paper sold here are unique. You will never find any similar designs, not even in popular.

Other accessories such as reading lamps, bookmarks, diaries and etc. can also be found here! If you love scrap-booking, this is definitely the place for you. Prices are also quite reasonable for its quality.

Great Service by Part timer

I visited the outlet at Tampines and initially, I actually missed the outlet as it was located at the basement. However, when I saw the store, my first impression was that this must be a new upmarket bookstore.

As I walked in, my first impression was that this place had a upmarket feel with the place all decorated in white walls and racks and tables. The staff also had a nice black vest as their uniform which added a more sophisticated look.

However, when I browsed around, I started to realise to the items in here looked really similar. And it was only when I was at the counter that I realise that this was actually another chain by Popular but seems that there was much better service here.

I spoke to one of the part time staff and she managed to share with me the differences in the planners without opening up the packaging or taking a second look. This was something that I do not see often in part timers. Either she is really dedicated, or the training here is really much better.

In terms of variety, the items were the same as in Popular and I felt that they could have offer something different to make them stand up from Epilogue or Popular.

An alternative to Popular

UrbanWrite caught my eye as all the delightful-looking stationery and scrapbook materials were displayed openly in the store. The walls of the store had really appealing artistic decorations, so I got curious and stepped in to take a look.

The stuff sold at UrbanWrite is rather similar to common bookstores like Popular, except that there is a wider range of craft items available. This store sells stationery items, notebooks and more, which I feel would appeal more to the younger shoppers. Some things sold there have interesting patterns, like those sold at Smiggle.

However, since UrbanWrite has few branches on the island, I would still choose to visit more common bookstores to get the necessary stationery items.
