I have died and gone to Crust heaven
The Takashimaya food hall is always a great place. Perla’s Pastry Boutique is one that is extremely prominent due to the colourful and tantalizing array of pastries and desserts on display.
It was after trying my first strawberry tart from Perla’s that I actually start to accept (for lack of a better word) desserts. The crust is absolutely to die for! Good things do not come cheap; one whole tart costs almost $30, but it is good (albeit sinful) indulgence I tell ya! I have also tried the mixed berries tart but found the strawberry one to taste way better.
Not only pretty, but tasty!
Under the same boss as Ristorante da Valentino, Perla is the sister. They make the cakes fresh daily at the restuarant in Turf city, and send the cakes to the boutique at Taka everyday.
Not only do the sell an assortment of cakes, they also sell captivating fruit custard tarts. Though a tad pricey at $10.80 per 5", it is certainly worth the money, for the custard tarts are not too sweet, the custard melts smoothly in your mouth and the tart crust? Perfect.
Even when kept for a couple of days, the tarts and cakes remain freshly tasting. Their valentino cake, a chocolate cake with rum soaked raisins and chocolate ganache, is not too sweet and not too bitter. It isn't very cloying and is surprisingly light on the tongue.
They do customise cakes too. If you don't want any sweets, just ogling at the aesthetics of the tarts and cakes is enough to put a smile on your face.
