Where the maids roam and toilets reek, so I heard...
(Updated: November 30, 2012)
Overall Rating

2.5
In the past, I always wanted to go to Lucky Plaza because I've had friends who said that there were nice clothes there. However, as time passed, that want eventually died down due to negative reactions whenever I asked about the place, some saying that it is a maid's shopping territory, and others saying that it has one of the dirtiest toilets within the Orchard region.

I don't mean to judge or anything, but just by hearing all these, I'd rather not stop by the place anymore, or at least not in a really really long time. Orchard is a big place, so there are many other places to shop at. If you want clothes that don't necessarily have to kill your wallet, try Bugis Street, you're better off there, I guess. Tourists could stop by Lucky Plaza for the experience, while others might probably go there for service shops or the food even. Just know that if you are in desperate need for the toilet, avoid Lucky Plaza's at all cost (even Bugis Street's toilets have more standard)!

Come here only for a purpose

My purpose coming here would be either to eat at Resto Surabaya, Ojolali , visiting Sant Rolane's which supplies garments for work or using the underpass to cross over to Ngee Ann City.

I would avoid Lucky Plaza to do anything else. I wouldn't buy souvenirs there nor would I buy anything else as most of the shops there have a bad rep of ripping off tourists. Couple of exceptions exist. I'd buy perfumes from Dollars and Cents, I've shopped there a few times and they have earned my trust. The other is a chocolate shop facing the main road. I'd wait for a good bargain at the bargain bin. For example, I could get 3 huge bars of Toblerones at $10.

Another great place for Indonesian food and a souvenir fix
Overall Rating

2.5
I believe that most of the locals would name Lucky Plaza as one of the place to get 'exclusive-from-Singapore' souvenirs. There are lots of shops in this shopping mall that sells Uniquely Singapore souvenirs at affordable prices. On top of that, some shops could be spotted selling gadgets and electronics. However, I do not encourage buyers to get their gadget fix there. I must comment that the shop owners there are really unfriendly; I had a very bad experience with them, got yelled at while walking past their shop, being stared at by the shop owners of that particular lane which you're walking past.

What attracted the locals to visit Lucky Plaza would be for Indonesian food. The Ayam Penyet eatery on the 5th floor is the most well known among the locals in Singapore. Other than that, there are quite a number of Indonesian restaurants serving authentic Indonesian cuisines.

Other than being able to get a food and souvenir fix at Lucky Plaza, I guess these are the two reasons the locals would visit Lucky Plaza, amist of their shopping trip along Orchard Road.

I have a very negative impression of Lucky Plaza, and it's not because of it's name, which brings to mind images of skanky massage parlours and seedy bars.

I had to visit this shopping mall on numerous occasions, as my aunt used to operate a store here, and I helped her as a courier. Even though I was a familiar face (I come in at least twice a day, 5 days a week), I experience touting on levels so extreme they would make Chinatown seem amateurish.

I was dragged into shops, shouted at, and even threatened by shop owners on many occasions. They could not understand that I was simply not interested in their wares, and presumed that I was a gullible tourist. Very bad experience indeed, do take heed and beware of such incidents.

In comparison to the other buildings in the classy roads of Orchard, Lucky Plaza would stand out as one of the oldest. Having the run down architecture of a warehouse, it would seem like Lucky Plaza has been long past its golden era of prosperity, with the levels filled with junkie-like stores and cheap finds.

Despite all of it, it does have its perks that keep it running. Lucky Plaza is home to many money changers and being placed under such competitive circumstances, the rates are therefore very much bargain-able. Cheap cosmetics and fragrances are also found here, with many shops selling it at prices lower than retail prices, if you wont mind the fact that it is last season that is.

Lucky Plaza too, has one of the best food places in town. Right in the heart of Orchard road it is difficult to find the budget eats, especially with wallet strings getting increasingly tighter in relation to countless shopping. The Yong Tau Foo store at the top level is pretty much always crowded, with enthusiastic shoppers stopping for a quick meal or the office people coming down for a quick bite. In summary, it is the best budget place available in the heart of bustling Orchard road.
