Botak Jones has always been highly recommended by my friends for its low pricings and food. I recently dined at the branch at Clementi, located in a regular hawker center amongst the other traditional food stalls.

I would say that I was disappointed by the experience because the portions were very small, although the food was not bad. The prices were not my idea of cheap for a hawker center stall.

However, service was fast and the staff were friendly and open to changing our orders at the last minute. I am unlikely to dine here again unless it’s for gatherings.

Botak Jones used to be the savior of dying, empty coffee shops because wherever and whenever it opened an outlet there would be long queues even at secluded locations. I tried it out of curiosity because of all the hype and actually had to wait close to 45 mins for my fish and chips! The cajun chicken was the second dish I tried and till today, these are the 2 dishes I will order most of the time.

Now that the hype has died down, I usually do not see any long queue forming at the cashier but the stall still has its regular crowds.

Some of their outlets used to serve beer on tap but sadly that is no longer available. I still miss having a pint of ice cold hoegaarden with my fish and chips.

When Botak Jones first made inroads into the Singapore market, I was a big fan. I always felt local western food stalls at hawker centers did not serve a large enough portion. And here came Botak Jones to our hawker centers with his loud American branding, generous portions, and delicious food.

I was hooked and so were many Singaporeans and Botak Jones expanded quickly. However, with its growth came a dismal drop in the quality of service which would not be too bad if it was not accompanied by drops in the quality of the food and the portions. Gone are the mouth watering tastes and large portions. The quality and quantity is now that of any normal western food stall but the prices remain high.

I remember meals at botak jones to be special occasions after school where me and my classmates would travel some distance to get to. We went the extra mile to locate this food joint simply because we thought that it was the best western food we could get for under 10 bucks. Unfortunately the same cannot be said now.

During my past few visits to botak jones, I was disappointed to find myself eating a much inferior version of the good old fish & chips. While the portion of fish seemed to have gotten smaller, what I found truly disappointing was that the fries that I once loved were served soggy.

While its food is still better in comparison to other more pricy western food stalls, it is very much less mouth watering as it once was.

My impression of Botak Jones was not so much of the food but more of the staff. You were required to queue to place your order, not like a restaurant where the waiter / waitress would come to take your order.

I was at this branch diagonally opposite Orchard Cineleisure and I was served by this young guy. His English was so slang that I could not catch what he was talking about. I was not a frequent customer there so I needed more time to go through the menu. This guy seemed to get impatient, it was a weekday lunch and it was before the peak lunch period so there was actually no one behind me in the queue.

If this was really in an American restaurant, I would not have paid any tips to this guy, not that I have the habit of tipping in Singapore.

Botak Jones has its emphasis placed on an all american bistro-diner food, which is supposedly "fresh food" comprising a generous portion of a main and sides on a plate. However, in this particular version of 'diner food', the sides were much better than any of the mains.

The steak was not very well marinated and was not very fresh, since a strong foul smell was emulated from the tough steak instead of a fragrant meat flavour. Their fish is the sutchi fillets attained from frozen packs (for grilled fish and fish and chips), which has a fishy smell that some cannot tolerate.

On the other hand, their sides are excellent, especially their cajun fries and the cheese potato, which is so good that i could eat it as a meal. When visiting them, i usually order the sides only for my meal, as they are cheaper and better.

The cooking time and service waiting time is long, so do not go if you want to have your food on the spot. Also, the mains are not as good as some other coffee shop western food stalls I have tried like lava rock.

If you're looking for some decent western food at great value, Botak Jones is the place to go. So far, I have tried two of their dishes: their Fish n Chips and their Beef Burger. The latter was rather ordinary, slightly better than what you would get at a fast food place. However, the Fish n Chips was thoroughly delicious and a must try for anyone who happens to dine there.

The trick, I think, is in the batter which I felt wasn't too thick and therefore complemented the meat very well. As for the side dishes, Botak Jones offers you a range of sides to choose from. A typical meal comes with two sides. My suggestion is that you try the fries and the baked cheese potato, both of which are well seasoned and wonderfully prepared. If you wish for a healthier option, you may pick the coleslaw instead.

One interesting aspect of Botak Jones is that the stalls are very generous with their portions. Don't make the mistake I did of ordering an extra side! Or you may have to end up loosening your belt after that..

However, some of the dishes on the menu should be avoided. After all, this is no 5 star restaurant. My friend tried their steak once and it was terrible. Instead, stick to the more popular, safe items on the menu.

If you're not picky about ambience, and are looking for quick, simple, value for money western meal, then Botak Jones is the place for you.
