Vegan food is making its way up the ranks, with vegan restaurants out to prove that going meat-free can be delicious too. With inventions like the revolutionary 100% vegan Impossible Burger gaining in popularity, gone are the gloomy days where people thought that anything meatless equals a bland salad.

Singapore already has a comfortable selection of trendy vegan eateries, and if you’re heading over to Kuala Lumpur for a holiday, you needn’t worry about finding vegan-friendly food, because there isn’t any shortage of options there too.

1. Fittie Sense – all-day brunch

We work hard all week, so we’re definitely deserving of some hearty brunch food during the weekend. Don’t worry about failing your diet with a #cheatday when you’re dining at Fittie Sense, because everything here is crafted with healthy eating in mind. There aren’t any deep-fried, processed or sugary foods here either.

Their menu has options for everyone, with both vegan and non-vegan dishes available. There’s a Vegan Chilli Con Carne (RM19, S$6.25) and Eden Burger (RM26, S$8.56) which is made with sweet potato, quinoa and mushrooms.

2. Sushi Kitchen KL – vegan Japanese food

You’d think that it would be difficult to find vegan Japanese food – seeing how seafood is so commonly used in Japanese dishes – but Sushi Kitchen has found its way around this. You won’t get any mock meat either; Their menu proudly presents vegetables as-is, prepared in different forms like tempura.

Vegetarian versions of popular Japanese dishes are also available here, such as Golden Miso Udon (RM10.80,S$3.55) and Happy Spicy Noodle (RM10.90, S$3.59). There’s also the Japanese Edamame Fried Rice (RM11.80, S$3.88) and the Global Warming Maki sushi (RM16, S$5.26) which is a deep-fried radish and carrot sushi.

3. The Good Co. Cafe – colourful smoothie bowls

As if you needed a reason to chow down on a vibrant smoothie bowls, The Good Co. Cafe has a menu that’s a sight for sore eyes for those on a detox diet. Their Acai Bowl (RM23.90, S$7.86) is packed with red dragon fruit, bananas, mangoes, strawberries and crunchy granola.

You’ll find that the rest of the menu has equally colourful health foods, with locally-inspired dishes like Nasi Lemak Beckham (RM20.90, S$6.87) with monkey head mushroom rendang,  which was created specially for David Beckham when he visited KL back in 2017.

If you’re craving a good ol’ crunchy salad, you’ll find them packed in jars with a twist of flavours, as seen with their Kimchi Cauliflower “Fried Rice” (RM15.90, S$5.23) and Scallop Dee Kap (RM15.90, S$5.23) which has grilled ginger lemongrass “scallop” mangoes.

4. The Ganga Cafe – Indian buffets from $8.23

Situated in a quiet old neighbourhood in Bangsar, The Ganga Cafe has been a local favourite for Indian food for quite some time now. They’ve got an extensive fully-vegetarian menu that’s egg-free, with vegan options available upon request.

Their standard Thali (RM10, S$3.28) comes with 3 vegetable dishes, 2 dhal curries, rasam, papadam and salad.

You can order dishes to share, have your meal banana leaf style, or order a la carte dishes like a Punjabi-style breakfast of Chana Bhatura (RM11.80, S$3.88) – a puffed flatbread which comes with chickpeas.

If you’re dining with company, split a Hyderabad Dum Briyani (RM20, S$6.58) and add on a Bindi Masala (RM15, S$4.94), which is a gluten-free curry made with either ladies’ fingers or okra. Pile on some Plain Palak (RM10, S$3.29) and Aloo Gobi (RM14, S$4.60) while you’re at it.

Look out for their Sunday buffet as well – you’ll be able to have a taste of all their dishes for just RM25/person (S$8.23).

5. Barat Lifestyle – vegetarian fine-dining

Barat Lifestyle isn’t your typical Western restaurant. If you’ve always wondered what vegetarian fine dining is like, check out their Degustation Menu (RM99/person, S$32.56) which shows off their chef’s culinary prowess over vegetarian dishes.

If you’re here for a regular meal, start off with a couple of their small plates like their Jalapeno Poppers (RM18.90, S$6.22) or Vegan Omelette (RM10.90, S$3.59). Move on to a hearty Mediterranean Vege Burger (RM24.90, S$8.19) or split a classic Hawaiian Pizza (RM25.90, S$8.52). Vegan options are available for everything too.

6. RGB Cafe at The Bean Hive – in a cosy bungalow

Taking residence in a 1-storey bungalow in an old neighbourhood just on the fringe of KL city, RGB Cafe could easily be mistaken for someone’s home. Here, you’ll find homely reading corners, dining tables and comfortable sofas to chill out over a cuppa.

If you’re dining with your friends who aren’t quite up for a vegan meal, there’s something for everyone here as they’ve got vegan and vegetarian options, as well as dishes with meat. The menu has a mix of Western and Asian dishes, from Pink Oatmeal with Organic Rolled Oats (RM13, S$4.28), to Vegetarian Nasi Lemak Kukus (RM21, S$6.91).

If you’re vegan and craving waffles and ice cream, LN Fortunate Coffee Malaysia’s got you sorted. 9. WTF – What Tasty Food – Indian fusion fare

WTF – What Tasty Food has a rather cheeky name and you don’t have to look far to see that this place is packed with personality. They’ve even got an unknown dish called Whatever (RM18, S$5.92) for finicky eaters. It’s mostly Indian vegetarian fare here, but their extensive menu also has Western and Indo-Chinese fusion dishes.

Their classics include a Tandoori Platter (RM28, S$9.22) and Kaju Gravy (RM20, S$6.58), a rich cashew gravy. For a dish with a cross-culture twist, try the WTF Special Pasta (RM24, S$7.90) which has a medley of sauces, herbs and spices.

If you’ve never had Indian food on a hot plate, go for the Tava Masala Sizzler (RM35, S$11.52) that comes with marinated tandoori potatoes, gravy and vegetable cutlets for sharing. There are also vegan version of these dishes available – just ask their waiters.

You can’t really go wrong with Mexican-inspired food if you’re craving a meal that’s oozing with flavour. Don’t worry about feeling sinful, because Sala KL’s menu only features plant-based ingredients that are lower in calories. That means no eggs or dairy either.

You can expect a hearty protein-packed dining experience here, with a menu filled with sloppy burgers, wraps and tacos.
