We all need a little Taobao haul once in a while. From trendy clothes to quirky home finds, the platform has plenty of items to tempt us into adding more to our carts. But while it’s easy to get carried away with all the shopping, have you ever stopped to think about how much you’re spending on shipping fees?
With Singaporeans’ love for travelling to China showing no signs of slowing down, your next holiday could be the perfect excuse to go all out on Taobao. Instead of shipping your haul to Singapore, consider having your orders delivered straight to your hotel there. It might sound unconventional, but shipping Taobao orders to your hotel in China is easier than you think.
The current exchange rate is RMB1 = ~S$0.20 as of 26th October 2026.
While we’re not suggesting you book a flight to China just to shop on Taobao, you might be surprised by how much cheaper your haul gets when you ship it domestically instead of all the way to Singapore.
When using the Taobao app, setting your location to Mainland China unlocks deals that may not be available to shoppers in Singapore, including lower prices and products sold exclusively within China. If you are not well-versed in Chinese, use a translation tool like Google Translate to navigate the app without changing its language settings.
We also hope you’ve got Alipay (App Store | Google Play) set up on your phone by now. After all, getting around China without it can be a hassle. While not compulsory, we’d also recommend getting a Chinese phone number, as it makes it easier to contact your courier directly and request delivery address changes if needed.

Alas, the biggest deal breaker when shopping on Taobao is often the shipping fees. But one of the biggest perks of shipping your order to your hotel in China is that you’ll get to enjoy lower domestic shipping rates, ranging from RMB5 (~S$1) to RMB15 (~S$2.90). Many listings even offer free domestic delivery, marked as bāo yóu (包邮).
On the other hand, shipping orders to Singapore typically involves 3 common methods: direct shipping, consolidated air shipping, and consolidated sea freight. Direct shipping sends your orders straight to Singapore, while consolidated air shipping combines multiple parcels at a warehouse in China before sending them over by air. If you’re buying bulkier or heavier items, consolidated sea freight is another option, though delivery may take longer.
To give you a rough idea of what to expect, we’ve included some estimated shipping costs to Singapore for reference. Actual prices may vary depending on your parcel’s weight and dimensions, as well as your chosen shipping service.
| Shipping method | Estimated cost | Estimated shipping time |
| Direct air shipping | RMB42 to RMB78/kg (~S$8 to S$15) | 5-8 days |
| Consolidated air shipping | RMB42 to RMB78/kg (~S$8 to S$15) | 5-8 days |
| Consolidated sea freight | RMB16 to RMB31/kg (~S$3 to S$5.90) | 12-20 days |
BTW, even though Taobao now offers free sea shipping to Singapore with no minimum spend on eligible items, not all items qualify. So if the item you’ve had your eye on doesn’t qualify for free shipping, bookmark it and place an order on your next trip to China, then have it shipped to your hotel instead.

By removing the main bottlenecks of cross-border e-commerce, like international shipping and customs clearance, domestic delivery in China becomes much more straightforward.
Local courier services such as SF Express, ZTO Express, YTO Express, and Yunda Express use automated sorting facilities and scheduled dispatch windows to handle high-volume deliveries across the country. When you ship your Taobao order to your hotel in China, you can expect to receive it as soon as the next day for local deliveries, or within 2-4 days if it’s coming from another province.

Formatting your delivery address correctly is arguably the most important step in this guide. You don’t want your Taobao haul to end up at a hotel in another province, leaving you on a wild goose chase to track it down.
Finally, tap the address book icon in the top-right corner of your Taobao app and paste your hotel address into the relevant field. Make sure you’ve selected the correct hotel branch and filled in your personal details to avoid any delivery mix-ups.
This is a small but easily overlooked step. Check with your hotel’s front desk or concierge to confirm they accept parcels for guests, as some have specific delivery policies. If they do, ask how parcels are sorted and collected, so you know exactly where to look.

When selecting your preferred delivery method, Taobao will display the available options, most of which are free, while others may come with a small fee. You’ll also see the estimated delivery window for each option, so you can choose one that fits your travel dates.

If you want to play it safe, contact the seller’s customer service directly to confirm whether your parcel will arrive before your checkout date. Delivery times can vary depending on where you’re staying in China, so it’s better to double-check.
Pro tip: If you’re only in China for a short trip, consider placing your orders before your flight so your parcels have more time to arrive. Remember to reach out to your hotel before placing an order to confirm that it accepts Taobao deliveries, so your parcels don’t end up stranded when you arrive.
