State Courts Heritage Gallery
For most Singaporeans, courtrooms are slightly intimidating places we only ever see on TV, in true crime documentaries, or splashed across the news. Unless you’ve had official business at the State Courts, chances are you’ve never actually set foot inside one before.
That’s exactly what makes the State Courts Heritage Gallery such an interesting visit. It takes you through the history and evolution of the State Courts, showing how our justice system has changed over the years. You’ll even get to step into a mock-up courtroom – it’s about as close as you’ll get to sitting in court without being involved in an actual case.
Where is the State Courts Heritage Gallery located?

You’ll find the heritage gallery within the State Courts itself, located on Level 1. The easiest way to get there is via MRT – alight at Chinatown MRT Station and take Exit D. From there, it’s a short 4-minute walk to the State Courts.

Yes, entry is free. Just note that you’ll need to go through a security check before entering the State Courts, which is standard protocol, so don’t be alarmed. Also, photography and videography are only allowed inside the gallery.
What to expect at the State Courts Heritage Gallery?

The gallery is split into 3 main zones – Our Judicial Heritage, Commitment to Quality Justice, and A Forward-looking Judiciary. Most of the exhibits are digital, so you’re not just reading history, you’re interacting with it. Here are some highlights to look out for:
Our Judicial Heritage
A timeline of legal milestones & the people who have served Singapore

This zone kicks things off with an interactive timeline that lets you swipe through Singapore’s judicial history, where you’ll see key moments from the nation’s early court system to the establishment of a formal judiciary. The timeline also covers major milestones such as the rise of the Subordinate Courts and their transformation into today’s State Courts.

Keep a lookout for a display of artefacts that spotlight the contributions of past and present judges and staff who have played a part in upholding the law. You’ll also find a record of the Heads of the State Courts since Singapore’s independence – a nice touch that puts real faces to the institution.
Commitment to Quality Justice
Visit a courtroom from 1975 & relive re-enacted cases

Next, visit a mock-up of a traditional courtroom from 1975, complete with meranti wood wall panels that were shifted from the State Courts Building to mirror the look and atmosphere of courtrooms from back in the day.
You can also watch re-enactments of some of Singapore’s most talked-about cases, including the Yang Yin trial, where the former tour guide was charged with misappropriating $1.1 million from a wealthy Singaporean widow. Watch his testimony and cross-examination unfold, minus the courtroom jitters.

But the courtroom isn’t the only thing worth exploring. You’ll also find a shelf of drawers designed to replicate filing cabinets, where 15 public interest cases heard in the State Courts over the past 4 decades are summarised for visitors. Cases include the Nicoll Highway collapse and Geylang Serai mass food poisoning.
