Minimalist Backdrops For Your Next Photoshoot
Make way for the next big movement to grace your Instagram feed: minimalism. With its pared down palette, minimalist backgrounds are simple enough to make your outfit pop and still achieve that clean aesthetic.
Thankfully, you don’t have to rely on just the solid colours of your office wall to achieve this effect. Head over to these locations and add a tinge of sophistication to your next IG post by playing around with the patterns and colours.
Monochromatic Elegance
1. Tampines Ave 9, Blk 491 – 496
Located just a stone’s throw away from Tampines North Primary School, Blocks 491 to 496 in Tampines Avenue 9 are unique in that they are painted in a high-contrast black and white.
This Tudor-inspired colour scheme was voted by residents to replace their previously brick-red facade.
Notice how the lines of the diamond are perfectly parallel to the railing behind it. The geometry helps make the matte black stand out even more, resulting in a stunning image.
The walls and ledges nearby provide strong leading lines so use them if you’re looking to add some depth to your photos.

2. CHIJMES
CHIJMES was known as the Convent of Holy Infant Jesus and once housed the oldest Catholic girls’ school in Singapore. After being gazetted in 1990, the entire complex underwent extensive restoration and transformation works.
Now, it serves a lifestyle hub where the visitors can partake in an array of activities – like dining in ethnic restaurants and attending recitals – in an area filled with rich history.
Supporting the Gothic-themed arched linkway are beautiful capitals adorned with floral trimmings. Together with the spiral staircase, these look like something out of a Tim Burton movie.
How to get there:
By MRT: Within walking distance from City Hall and Bras Basah Stations
By Bus: Take Services 2, 12, 33, 147 and 190 and alight at “Aft Chijmes”
Solids + Symmetry
3. Kampong Kapor Methodist Church
Right across Rochor NPC is a building so white, you’ll think you’ve just seen a piece of heaven. Kampong Kapor Methodist Church has the distinct honour of being Singapore’s first Peranakan church and was gazetted for conservation in 1989 as part of the Little India Historic District.
Right behind the church is a gorgeous pure white wall you could use for your shots. Notice how the crosses are perfectly aligned with one another. Experiment with symmetry to bring about a sense of balance to your photos.

Standing out from the shophouses along Mosque Street is a boutique hotel that certainly lives up to its name. The pure white facade of the Porcelain would make anyone believe that it was carved out of its namesake.
Add some symmetry and depth to your images by utilising the pillars in front of the hotel.
For those hoping to add some slight colour to their pics, The Porcelain’s walls have a patterned black stripe lined down at the middle that complements the surrounding white.

5. Marina Square Maze
Nope, this is not a still from the next “Maze Runner” movie. The Marina Square Maze is technically an emergency fire escape route but that has not stopped Instagrammers from using it as the backdrop for their #findingmyself posts.
Tip: Fair warning, if you’re gonna take a wide shot like this, make sure your friend has steady hands as the vertical drop is very high.
Tip: The maze is perfect for close-up shots as its walls are smooth and have clean leading lines.
How to get there:
Make your way to Marina Square, Level 2 and exit through the door nearest to Samsonite (#02-81). Walk straight down the pathway till you see a door marked “Stair 30-D-1” on your right. Enter the door and you’re now in the maze!
