There’s a reason why everyone went crazy over the hidden staff canteen in Changi Airport when news first spread. “Touristy spot” and “cheap food” are 2 things you don’t usually hear in the same sentence. Now, that’s not the only one of its kind around. Behold the hidden food court under Buddha Tooth Relic Temple: Lian Xin Food Court.
Previously known as Five Insights Hall, Lian Xin Food Court is an under-the-radar gem largely patronised by office workers in the area and the vegetarian community in Singapore. Find the entrance to this elusive space along Neil Road. You’ll know you’re at the right place when you see a wooden flight of stairs and a green store signboard.

Recently renovated, the space is bright, clean, and adorned with a hint of oriental-themed decor. Pretty swaggy for an underground food court hardly anyone knows about but that’s not why regulars return. They’re here for the affordable food and drinks stores that have seemed to escape the rising GST unscathed.

There are 4 vegetarian stores selling mixed rice, noodles, western food, and drinks. The menu changes day to day but some notable hits you can hope to try include the Laksa Noodles ($4) with a generous amount of ingredients, available on Wednesdays and Sundays only.

The Char Siew Noodles ($4) are also a hit, served with dumplings and “sambal” chilli. It’s easy to forget everything here is meat-free. Meanwhile, at the economical rice store, a serving of rice or noodles with 2 vegetable sides will only set you back $3.

Save room for desserts – they’re just a dollar each. Indulge in red bean soup and longan fungus for $1. Canned drinks, kopi, teh, and milo are also sold for the same price.

The increasing cost of living gives many of us reason to have a long and hard think about what we spend our dollars on.
