INSIGHT SAVH Charity Gala Dinner: Help the Visually handicapped help themselves

Creating Awareness for the Blind in Singapore

Some of you may have recalled us featuring Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH)’s mobile massage team in our “29 Money Saving Life Hacks for Singaporeans” article. By providing massages starting at just $10 for a 20 minute session, you would help give the handicapped workforce more opportunities and be able to get a good massage at a great price at the same time! More info here.

This time, to help raise more awareness, Clearvision Eye Clinic & LASIK Centre in collaboration with Vinci Arts Gallery is jointly organising a charity gala dinner. This is to support SAVH and raise public awareness as well as funds for the blind. 100% of the proceeds raised will go towards SAVH.

The blind members of SAVH will be serving the meals during the dinner. These visually handicapped members are trained to serve regularly for SAVH’s very own Dining-in-the-Dark program. Yes! another activity that we recommended recently in our 22 magical dating ideas for Singaporeans was the above mentioned “Dining in the Dark”.

It’s really a super cool experience that you should try out at least once. This is what you entire dinner will look like. No. More. Smartphones.

So yes, we’re big on supporting local and charitable causes in our articles and I hope this seeps more into our culture too, especially in the younger generation. I find Western countries have a really supportive mindset to the handicapped and disabled and would love to see it here too.

Unfortunately, tickets for the Charity dinner are all sold out already, but TheSmartLocal team will be back soon with a recap of the event!

Charity Gala Dinner Event Details:

  • Venue: Lawry’s The Prime Rib Singapore
  • Date: 9 March 2014, Sunday
  • Time: 6pm – 9pm

You can see the full press release below.

“INSIGHT – to see and perceive beyond the sense of sight – is a 9-month long campaign that is dedicated to raise public awareness and empathy for the blind. The message of the campaign, help the visually handicapped help themselves, aims to serve as a reminder for the public to help the visually impaired with their integration into society.

The Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH) faces a two-fold problem. Our society generally discriminates against the blind, perceiving them to be significantly less able. And possibly as a result of the latter, the visually handicapped themselves generally lack self-confidence to contribute back to society.

To provide full closure to campaign INSIGHT, Clearvision Eye Clinic & LASIK Centre in collaboration with Vinci Arts Gallery is organizing a Charity Gala Dinner which will be held at Lawry’s The Prime Rib Singapore, our official venue and F&B sponsor.

Each ticket is priced at $250, and the proceeds will go towards skills development programs and courses as well as blindness equipment to aid the visually handicapped in completing daily work tasks at SAVH.”

Special Mentions:

  • Official Venue Sponsor: Lawry’s The Prime Rib Singapore
  • Official Guest-of-Honour: Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Social and Family Development and Second Minister for Defence
  • Guest Speaker: Dr. Yeo Sze Ling, blind PhD holder and research scientist at A*STAR who received special mention in PM Lee Hsien Loong’s National Day Rally Speech 2013
  • Special Guest: H.E. Pavlo Sultansky, Ambassador of Ukraine to Singapore
  • Guest Performer: Adelyn Koh, 12-year-old co-host for the President’s Star Charity for the past 3 years who was born blind due to a rare congenital disease
