There’s A New Ice Skating Rink In SG With Open Skate Sessions, Plus Ice Hockey & Figure Skating Classes

Ice Penguin Singapore – ice skating rink

Whether you’re a long-time Olympics fan or just discovered Alysa Liu on TikTok, figure skating is suddenly everywhere. Back at home, you’d be hard pressed to find the same fanfare for the sport with only 1 rink – Kallang Ice World – available in Singapore for seasoned figure skating national athletes and wannabe ice skaters alike, until now.

Located in Clarke Quay Central, Ice Penguin Singapore is a 1,000 sqft synthetic ice rink where you can try your hand at ice hockey, ice skating, and figure skating, with classes for all ages and skill levels.

What is Ice Penguin Singapore?

Ice Penguin Singapore is the newest player on the scene, designed for beginners who are still finding their stride on the ice.

Helmed by a former SEA Games medalist and national ice hockey player alongside other TeamSG athlete coaches, Ice Penguin offers both basic and advanced programmes for those looking to pick up ice skating, figure skating or ice hockey. Self-guided open skate sessions are also available for those who want to take things at their own pace.

How is Ice Penguin different from Kallang Ice World?

While Kallang Ice World’s rink uses real ice, Ice Penguin uses high-performance polymer panels, also known as synthetic ice, to replicate the feel of real ice without the frigid temperatures.

Though synthetic ice isn’t intended to be a substitute for the real thing, it’s a transitional playground for skaters to sharpen their skills and work their way towards more challenging ice rinks. These panels offer a little more resistance for novices who need more practice with their balance and edge control.

Slipping on the ice while others glide and twirl past can be a humbling experience, but at this synthetic ice rink, first-timers can level up fast and find their footing in a more controlled environment, with structured programmes and consistent training conditions year-round.

What to expect at Ice Penguin Singapore

Ice Penguin’s name reflects its aim in creating an environment where, like its mascot, beginners can take small and steady steps before growing comfortable and confident on the ice.

You’ll find a range of options for children aged 4 and above, alongside teens and adults. Classes include self-guided open skate sessions, trial classes, multi-lesson programmes, and private practice sessions, depending on your needs.

Coaches will also guide the sessions in small groups of 8, so you can fall or make mistakes without the usual embarrassment you might feel in an open skate session.

Essential equipment will be provided for beginner programmes, but students will have to get their own gear for Figure Skating and Ice Hockey programmes by Lesson 3.

Be sure to use the promotional code PENGUIN10 to get a 10% discount on classes, valid only until 12th April 2026. All lesson bundles are valid for 6 months from the date of purchase.

Ice skating

Not to be confused with figure skating, ice skating focuses on the basic movements you’ll need to master before you can ace the technical skills required for more advanced sports.

Open skate sessions are available for children aged 4 to 12 at an hourly rate of $38 per child, with ice skates and protective guards rental included. While the experience is largely self-guided without coaching provided, there will also be helpers on-site to supervise.

If you’d like a little more guidance, Ice Penguin’s Learn to Ice Skate Basic Foundation Programme is a helpful introductory course. You’ll learn fundamental skating skills like balance, posture, basic movement, stopping, and building confidence on the ice, no experience needed. Rental skates and protective guards are provided as well.

Sessions are organised by age groups, with separate classes for little ones aged 4 to 8, tweens between 9 and 13, and teens and adults over 14 years old.

Parents hoping to enrol their kids can watch from outside the rink. For beginners below 10 years old, 1 parent can assist in the session if needed.

If you’re still finding your groove, it might be better to opt for the cheaper 1-hour lesson first, which costs $75. Private 1-to-1 coaching comes at a higher rate of $150 per session. Those wanting more time on the ice can sign up for a bundle package, with 10 sessions priced at $680.

Not your first time on the ice? Their Advanced Development Programme is designed for those who’ve got a good handle on the basics and are looking to refine their skating skills. You’ll have the opportunity to improve your skating control, balance, edge work, and turns so you can glide with more confidence.

Kids aged 4 to 12 will be grouped together, while those aged 13 and above will be assigned to their own class.

Individual 1-hour lessons cost slightly more than the basic lessons at $85, but opting for a package might be a smarter choice if you want to see steady improvement over time. Over the course of 8 sessions ($580), coaches will monitor your progress, with progress assessments and structured training to improve your technical precision, speed, and control on the ice.

Ice hockey

Heated Rivalry fans, it’s your time to shine. The Ice Hockey Fundamentals Programme is open to those who have either completed their Ice Skating Development Programme or already possess advanced skating skills.

Training and progressive drills will help you work on core skills, including stick handling, puck control, game awareness, and foundational hockey techniques.

Rentals of ice skates, protective guards, and hockey training equipment like hockey sticks, shin pads and gloves are included, but you’re encouraged to bring your own hockey skate, equipment, and protective gear for a better fit and comfort.

Children aged 5 to 12 will be grouped together, while teens and adults will be taught in another session.

Parents are encouraged to accompany kids younger than 12 to the sessions to discuss equipment sizing and suitable gear with the coaches on the first day, as well as assist with their kids’ safety gear and skate fitting.

Fun fact: There are also ice hockey virtual reality (VR) simulators on site for players to get a feel for the mechanics of the sport.

Both 1-hour trial lessons ($95) and 10-lesson programmes ($880) are available for booking. Pro athletes can also book private sessions for personal practice or for 3 vs 3 scrimmage games, with free access to the equipment provided on-site, including the VR hockey training system. Hourly rates start at $350 for 1 hour and $600 for 2 hours.

Figure skating

If Alysa Liu’s iconic Stateside performance inspired you to get better at figure skating, Ice Penguin’s Figure Skating Fundamentals Programme might be the best place to start. Like ice hockey, you’ll need to already have strong skating skills or have finished the Skating Development Programme before enrolling in the programme.

While it might be hard to copy Alysa’s unique style and expressive moves, you can learn some of the basic twists and turns every figure skater knows. Coaches will be there to guide you on how to achieve proper posture, edge control, balance, body alignment, and preparation for beginner spins and figure skating movements.

As 4 to 12-year-olds will be taught separately from teens and adults, parents can watch from the viewing area outside the rink instead.

Lessons start at $95 per hour and $880 for 10 sessions, although choosing the latter might be more worth it as you’ll receive an exclusive discount on your figure skates. Unlike the ice skating and hockey classes, figure skates are not readily stocked and need to be pre-ordered.

Self-guided private practice sessions are also available for experienced figure skaters at $280 for 1 hour or $500 for a 2-hour session.

Visit Ice Penguin, the only synthetic ice skating rink in Singapore

Local figure skaters and hockey players working to keep their sport alive in Singapore have had their fair share of challenges, but with new rinks to practise like Ice Penguin and Team Singapore’s recent Bronze in Women’s Ice Hockey at the 2025 SEA Games, there might be a brighter future ahead for the winter sports scene.
