Free Hyundai Discovery Tour Singapore

Motorheads, especially those living in the West, you’re gonna want to listen up. In case you’re not in the know, South Korean automobile manufacturer Hyundai has a state-of-the-art facility in Jurong, and it’s by no means a just bleak, mass production car factory.

Opened in 2023, the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Centre Singapore hosts free guided tours called Hyundai Discovery Tours that are worth checking out even if you’re not a fervent car enthusiast. From harvesting your own vegetables in a smart farm to going on exhilarating joyrides on Singapore’s one and only rooftop driving track, here’s what you can expect.

The Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Centre Singapore (HMGICS) is a high-tech EV assembly and innovation hub opened by none other than Hyundai. Located in Jurong West, the building spans almost 87,000sqm and has the capability to manufacture up to 30,000 EVs per year.

But, not many know that the facility also hosts free guided tours of their premises, called Hyundai Discovery Tours. These tours are about 90 minutes long, and registration is simple; just head to the Hyundai Discovery Tour website to book a slot. If all slots are fully booked, HMGICS releases new slots for tours 30 days in advance, so do check back periodically.

Guests will get to try their hand at a bunch of activities, which include swinging by a smart farm to gather and taste-test leafy greens. You’ll also get a glimpse of the inner workings of their robotics-powered assembly lines, and cap off your visit with a thrilling ride on a rooftop driving track.

How to get to the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Centre Singapore?

Should you be planning for a date at HMGICS to experience their Hyundai Discovery Tour, getting there could be tricky as it is a tad out of the way.  The closest bus stop, Opp Blk 216b (stop ID 21169) is about a 14-minute walk from the building, and the buses you can hop on to get there include bus no. 157 and 185, with the former departing from Boon Lay bus interchange.

If you’re driving in, there’s plenty of parking at HMGICS’ basement and outdoor car park. The car park rates here start from $2.16 for the 1st hour or part thereof from 7am-7pm, and $4.04 per 3 hours from 7.01pm-6.59am the next day.

What to expect during the Hyundai Discovery Tour?

Catch vertical smart farms in action & harvest vegetables of your own

One of the highlights of the Hyundai Discovery Tour is the introduction of the facility’s very own vertical smart farms. They’ve got 2 of them, and they both work round the clock with the help of robotics to demonstrate how technology and automation can help land-scarce countries like Singapore to bolster their agricultural yield.

Visitors will be able to catch the farms in action, from the seeding process to the eventual harvest. At Smart Farm I located in the main lobby of the facility, you’ll even get to plant your own seeds by operating a robot arm at the seeding kiosks.

Smart Farm II is up on the 3rd floor; a total of 9 different greens are grown here and supplied to the tasting lounge, where you can savour the fresh produce. For a truly authentic farm-to-table dining experience, the farm’s crops are also sent to HMGICS’ in-house restaurant, Na Oh, and are thoughtfully used to whip up healthy Korean delicacies.

If you’d like to dabao some smart farm-grown veggies for your own recipes, there’s a section of the tour where you get to do just that. All visitors are allowed to pick 1 choice of greens to harvest, to bring home in a little paper bag.

Explore the facility with a VR tour & learn how Hyundai’s EVs are made

Of course, you’ll also learn more about Hyundai’s vehicles and how they are made right here in Singapore, through an immersive VR tour of their factory. After donning a VR headset, visitors can have a go putting together one of Hyundai’s IONIQ EVs, via motion gestures to pilot a virtual robot arm.
