About Fatcat Ice Cream Bar
You would be highly mistaken if you dismissed Fatcat Ice Cream Bar as yet another ice cream parlor cashing in on the recent ice cream and waffle trend. While her competition flaunts visually captivating waffles of countless varieties, Fatcat Ice Cream Bar sticks to the basics, delivering simple desserts with outstanding flavour.
Quirky Ice Cream
Varied, good quality and cheap! $3.90 for standard and $4.50 for premium flavors.
The ice cream and sorbet parlor offers an impressive range of flavors ranging from your classic chocolates and vanillas to unique creations like Hay & Honey or the Harry Potter-inspired Butter Beer. The ice cream is freshly made in-house from scratch. Most of the ingredients are sourced directly from farms and producers in the area, lending their ice creams undeniable quality when it comes to flavor and glorious texture.
The flavours are intense and true to their source ingredients for the most part, but the smoothness is something to behold – something other parlours fail to measure up to. Picking a winner from the flavours we had is difficult, but I would have to crown the lavender my favourite with its light and more nuanced flavour.
Gourmet waffles with a roasted salted egg sauce $6
While the waffles do a decent job complementing the ice cream, they are also accompanied with a unique roasted and salted egg sauce that goes wonderfully with the ice cream. It is however, necessary to note that gelatos might not pair as well.
The fat cat also offers a wine selection along with their ice cream and desserts. These dessert wines ($5) are chosen to pair with the menu items and come in small wine glasses to fit single scoops of ice cream.
But should your inner alcoholic prevail, the bar also offers regular sizes ($9) and bottles at the very modest price of ($45). These delightfully sweet wines go hand in hand with most of the menu’s offerings and make for easy drinking. Skeptics and aliens to the world of wine will have no issues here.
The parlor also dishes out plated desserts that far from the typical cakes or tarts. These desserts are seasonal items and results of months of creative experimentation by the talented chefs here. The result is an incredibly unique set of offerings typically reserved for the most high end restaurants at the price of $15 or less – beat that Swensen’s!
Desserts
The plated desserts are possibly the most exciting part of the whole experience. It’s a playground for the creativity of the team and a chance to offer something no other establishment offers.
Part 1 of the Chocolate Jardin. Yes, it’s very cute…
One of these dishes is the Chocolate Jardin (French for garden). It’s a two-course dessert that centers around the season of winter and Christmas and starts with an egg nog dessert. While the charming presentation speaks for itself, it is also a joy to slurp with a vanilla egg pudding at its base, giving it a mellow flavor and a heavier texture and a generous amount of nutmeg to give it that Christmas magic.
The main draw however is the Jardin which as you can see, is a joy to discover. It is in essence a smoked and deconstructed chocolate cake topped with brandied cherry sorbet. While the dish may have been over zealously smoked, it’s still a fun dish to eat, with its many interplaying textures. It’s a fun and creative dish and a guaranteed crowd pleaser.
Lemon Mojito Spheres
Their other creations, the Lemon Mojito and Grapefruit Campari spheres, are delightful bite-sized treats that burst in your mouth unleashing intense and balanced flavors onto your taste buds. Don’t attempt to share these though, because I mean it when I say they burst unless you want to suffer these concoctions splashing into your face and onto your clothes! And yes that’s exactly what happened to me. Be cautious!
Verdict
Fat Cat Ice Cream Bar is an ambitious establishment that manages to deliver by bringing great tasting ice cream and creative desserts to the masses at generous prices. It’s too early to say if the parlor can maintain this quality but it’s off to a good start and the future seems bright for Fat Cat Ice Cream Bar.
