Edge is a buffet style restaurant located at Pan Pacific Singapore, known for its extensive live food theatres and enormous variety of Pan-Asian food on offer. We previously had a great time covering their Champagne Brunch, which happens on Sundays. This time, we were back to take a look at “A Long Long Lunch” – their new four hour heritage lunch held only on Saturdays.
At “A Long Long Lunch”, guests can expect 30 local dishes such as Homemade Laksa, Fried Carrot Cake and Satay. This 4 hour lunch is combined with their afternoon tea presentation. Other treats include Kaya Toast, Portuguese Egg Tarts, Ice Kachang, Mango Pomelo Short Cake and a selection of fragrant Durian-based desserts.
I personally think they should have called it “Heritage Lunch” as that has a better ring to it. Anyway, here’s a look at the food!
Edge has one of if not the most live stations or “theatres” (as they call it) in Singapore. Apart from the Heritage food served at this lunch, there’s a good amount of cuisine from their usual buffet range including Western, Japanese, Thai and Indian.
The local selection of food includes three Chef Signatures – Homemade Laksa, Penang Prawn Noodle Soup and Bak Kut Teh. I felt the Bak Kut Teh was way too bland but I enjoyed the other two. As for the Otahs, well I always LOVE their Otahs.
You can also help you self to Satay Nasi Lemak, Roti Prata, Homemade Dim Sum, Crispy Char Siew Soo, Fried Carrot Cake and Popiah (pictured above) among other dishes. There was a good amount of variety here and I could only think of one dish that was missing – Chicken Rice.
I loved how they had live teh tarik and sugar cane stations. Those who have not since Teh Tarik (which literally means “pulled tea”) made before will be in for a treat.
Most local drinks like bandung and teh tarik were complimentary, but I was slightly annoyed to find out you had to pay $3 more for sugar cane and other juices. After all, you’re already paying $50 NETT and this small charge should have been factored into the price.
Their Western section included usual Edge items such as roasted meat, grilled meat as well as pasta options.
The dessert menu featured a good amount of local delcacies. Chef signatures included the Desserts Durian Puff, Durian Mousse Cake and Durian Pengat, Ice Kachang and Soy Bean Milk Pudding.
There was also the Portuguese Egg Tart, Mango Pomelo, Pandan Kaya and Nonya Kueh and Chinese Cookies among others. The durian desserts were popular with my dining companions while I went straight for the ice cream as usual.
I guess the question on most people’s minds would be – is it really worth it to spend $50 NETT on local food like this? Well, to put things in perspective, there’s another popular hotel F&B called Straits Kitchen priced at $68++ that has been serving a similar local food buffet for years!
The last time I brought my Korean in-laws to a hawker centre to try “Singapore Food”, they felt insulted (ouch) and emoed at me for the rest of the day. Because not everyone feels comfortable sweating it out local style at hawker centre.
So yes, buffets like “A Long Long Lunch” lets you enjoy local Singapore food in a comfortable setting with respectable ambience. It’s great for business meetings or taking relatives out who are particular about their dining environment.
I’ve been recommending Straits Kitchen for years to my overseas friends who are more into dining at restaurants. And now, I”ll have another good recommendation for them – for starters I find the variety at Edge far wider in both local and western cuisine. So even if local food is not their thing, they still have a very generous selection of cuisine to choose from. It’s also a big bonus that lunch goes on all the way till 4pm, giving you more than enough time to enjoy a very leisurely Saturday lunch.
